The 2001 Merc EFI on my Pantera III lost power after coming on plane yesterday. The power came back for about 10-20 seconds and dropped off again. This happened 4-5 times until it finally just turns over but not starting. Lifted the motor and a bunch of gas and oil came out the exhaust. Pulled plugs, their wet but not fouled, checked the fuel bulb, it wont stay hard like it was, took the fuel line off and held my thumb over it and the bulb stayed hard so its OK. I could hear the fuel pmp but thats the extent of my mechanical ability on a outboard. Last and best course of action was dropped it off at Riverside Marine for diagnose and repair. Kinda worrisome since its not under warranty but Im sure Steve and crew are topnotch at what they do. Sure cant afford a new motor at this time. coilpack maybe?
Sound like electrical, and maybe the ECM or coils, or other related parts.
I bet one or more of the fuel hoses under the cowling split open. I had something similar on my 96 150 EFI.
I like that diagnosis. If the bulb wont firm up, fuel is leaking somewhere downstream, which is between the bulb and the end of the last rubber fuel line segment under the cowl. Take the cowl off and have someone pump the primer while you watch to see where the fuel is coming from. Once you find it, you can remove the bad piece and match it up at a marine or auto parts dealer. One fairly common leak point is where the fuel line connects to the motor at the cowl. There are o-rings in that connector that can harden over the years and start to leak, although you would see that right where the line connects on the outside usually. Really sounds more like a line that has cracked, or has popped off inside…2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
I did take the cowl off and checked the routing of the fuel lines all the way thru the water separater. No leaks I could see on any hoses. Fuel is getting to the cylinders and thru to the exhaust but not firing. Ill let you know what Riverside finds for sure. ??? Appreciate this forum, guys. I agree on the coils. I had an almost identical problem about 1 1/2 years ago on my 2001 200 efi and it was actually 3 coils acting up. I decided to change all six for the piece of mind and have had no trouble since. Good luck in your speedy repair. Chris Coupel Paulina, La.Chris CoupelPaulina, La.
One thing I will add. It is not that hard to blow coils. The easy way is to pull a plug wire loose, and then turn it over. Family member used to do this in the spring to blow out the oil he put in the plug openings when he put it up for the winter. The problem is, that spark energy has to go somewhere, and it can blow thru the insulation inside the coil. This is true of outboards and automobiles. Ive helped my son diagnose this problem more than once on imports such as Toyota. The solution is to ground the plugs, or use the kill switch which grounds the ignition and prevents a spark impulse to the coils in the first place.2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
Kudos to Riverside Marine in Old Hickory. I got my Pantera III back. It was the fuel pump diaphram busted. Steve and crew justify the BassCat reputation for having the best service and best boat on the market. It only cost me 2.5 fingers instead of the arm and leg I was hoping against.
