Home › Forums › Bass Cat Boats › Side Imaging?? Is the Side Imaging worth $300.00 ???
I sold the 99 TR-21 Triton. Bought What has to be the nicest very low hour 2001 Pantera III in the Country. Silver mettalic with burgandy Stripe, Its a knock-out!! The boat has the original electronics, X-85 at the console, x-65 at the bow. I want to put a GPS unit at the console. Looked at the Humminbirds today. The smaller 5″ unit with GPS was $699.00 , The same unit with Side Imaging was $999.00 ( 787 & 797 I think) I had the 522c Igps on the Triton, I liked that unit OK. I kept my Navionics Hot Maps Card , Will it work in the Humminbird??? I would probably just go with another Lowrance, if I wasnt interested in the Side Imaging? So , is it everything that I dream of, or is it somewhat of a let-down??? I know some of you have used both, would like to hear your thoughts. Thanks in Advance! Showdawg
First, I dont own one (yet). But I have played with one quite a bit. The detail is beyond anything I would have imagined 5 years ago. We idled over a bridge and could see the steel latice clearly. The “shadows” bring out detail you would never be able to see with a normal image. There are quirks. dark band down the middle. You cant go too slow or the image looks odd. You cant mount a side-imaging transducer on the trolling motor. Had a friend that did this and it screwed things up pretty badly as it does not like to suddenly have its orientation changed with respect to the bottom, as the image disappears, etc… The main down-side I found was that we spent more time than we should have looking around, because we could see details that were never visible before. That rock is a washing machine. That lump on the bottom is an old automobile. That trestle was blown out, but look at those side rails and structure that is still there on the bottom of the gap… It is an eerie image when you first see it. Something tells me that one day that will be the way all depth finders display images, although there is still room for improvement in the software. It would be nice to be able to image at any speed, from nearly zero to something at least up in the 40-50mph range, but that is not possible yet. But Ill bet it will be before long. They are a bit pricey today, but then again I remember looking at a 52″ plasma TV 7-8 years ago selling for $16,999.00 at Tweeters. They are now down to 1/10th of that. All that said, I could still do just fine with an old neon-based flasher. I still use one in fact, for running at high speed. But the new side-scan finders are really pretty slick and will show you things you never knew were there. Whether that will translate into catching more fish or not is up to you…2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
Thanks for the reply oldtimer, do you know if my navionics card out of my Lowrance will work in the humminbird??
Navionics card will work. Had a 787 and had a Gold Navionics in it.
The Humminbird will accept Premium Navionics cards, and Gold will operate in some. Though HumminBird recognizes the Premium. The 797 units come with Side Imaging puck, usually for the trolling motor, so be cautious on which one you need and get. The Side Imaging does work fine on the troller with the right transducer. They also work fine on the rear with the rear mount. Speeds will depend on how you set up the screen speeds and display. Idling at about 4 mph works best. The dark line in the center is the water column, and you will get used to this. BCB
Buy it!! I will have a SI unit in my boat soon!!
I would buy the side imaging model. It will still do all the things a unit without side imaging will do so the SI is a big bonus. All the folks that I know have them swear by them. Ive got a 997 last week and the first glance is really impressive! Enjoy!
I have never used it, but for $300 more I would get side imaging in a heartbeat. Wish I had it on a side mount. 2005 Sabre, 150 XR6, Minn Kota Fortrex with Lowrance electronics
