When I mentioned switching to silver steer (ultra flex) BCB mentioned that some had complained of stiffer steering. I just completed an experiment. My silver steer installation included both the front-mount cylinder at the rear and a new helm. The combo resulted in just over 5.0 turns lock to lock. Was quite easy to steer but after running it a few times at 75+, I began to not like it as much. Steering corrections were a bit “long” due to the increased turns lock to lock. We decided (son and I) to try the old Sea Star helm (as installed by BCB). Put it on yesterday and bled. First thing I discovered is that it tightened up things just a touch. Before there was a very small amount of play pushing motor left and right. Now there is no play whatsoever. Next thing I noticed was that the 2.0 cu in helm from sea star produces just over 3.5 turns lock to lock, which is definitely stiffer than that 5.0+ turns lock to lock we had. However, that being said, on the water I like the 2.0 cu in helm. Much easier to drive at 75+ as the corrections are tiny rather than 1/8 of a wheel turn with the smaller silver steer helm pump displacement. For the moment, we are going to stick with the sea star helm. The silver steer cylinder is about as stout as one could be, so the combo seems to work. Stiffer to steer which doesnt bother me a bit.
OK, another day on the water. Im now convinced “this is it…” I REALLY like the 3.5 turns lock to lock. Made a long run against a 1mph current + wind, and running between 73.8 and 74.2 was simple. 400 pounds of adults + dog and absolutely full tank of fuel (empty live well). Had gotten a bit busier with the 5.1 turn lock to lock silver steer helm pump, but the 3.5 really feels “right” to me. Son liked it as well. If you have a cylinder issue, Id certainly recommend the ultra flex cylinder (including the silver steer cylinder which is a little more expensive but looks exactly the same as the regular uflex cylinder. This setup really feels “tight” with almost no play at the cylinder, and no pains with steering inputs to stop chine walk.BTW the standard seastar hoses will fit perfectly (orb fittings, not the really old fittings). So you can just replace the cylinder and keep everything else as is.
Oldtimer, Thanks for the detailed updates on this upgrade. Could you please share which Uflex model # you used? Thanks for your time.
Great write up on the Silver steer system.Pro: Silver steer helm and cylinder – Easier (less stiff) steering at cruising speeds, running tight bayous.Con: Silver steer helm and cylinder – Higher turning ratio makes for slow / long steering inputs at top end speeds.Seastar Helm with Silver Steer (Ultra flex) cylinder – Same as Seastar Cylinder, but no side to side play. Steering input is immediate. Steering stiffness same as Seastar. If I missed something, let me know Oldtimer!Always enjoy your input and experience.
Note that the higher turning ratio is something you get to choose, just like with seastar. For example, SeaStar has 1.7ci helm that increases the turns lock to lock and decreases effort, and they go above 2.0 which reduces the turns lock to lock.I installed my first SeaStar in the very early 90s and it came with the 2.0 ci helm, so that was all I knew for years. My BassCat came with seastar and the same helm, and had the same 4.1 turns lock to lock. When I ordered the silver steer system, the guy at ultra flex suggested the helm I ended up with, which was 5.1 turns lock to lock. Not so good IMHO. But they DO sell helms including a 1.7 and 2.0 among others, where the 2.0 would give exactly the same feel as the seastar helm. The silver steer system is rated to 300 HP +, so I felt pretty sure it was going to be rock solid for my 200. And so it seems to be. Could not be happier. Am going to start the process to exchange the helm, and am going with 2.0 ci as well. Will probably just hang on to that unless my seastar 2.0 fails, as it is working perfectly right now.
are they cheaper than seastar?
Seem to be in the same ballpark.
