My wife was in an accident. She has whiplash and some aches and pains…but she is going to be fine thank goodness. However, the guy who ran the red light managed to total our Silverado 1500 Extended Cab. The other drivers insurance company (Progressive) has been great so far. They gave us full retail settlement on the Silverado…plus they even gave me $43 to replace my BassCat stickers. So now were looking for a replacement. We have until tomorrow afternoon to surrender the rental car. Because we dont want a note right now, we have set $16k maximum. Weve found 2 very nice vehicles for that price, both in impeccable shape. A 2005 Avalanche LT 5.3 liter, loaded with 60k miles for $14900 and a 2006 F150 SuperCrew 4.6 liter, 18k miles, well equipped with snugger leer camper top for $16k. The question I have here is will the F150 with the 4.6 liter pull my Cougar as well as my 4.8 liter Chevy did? I have never really had a concern with the power of the Chevy…and I want to feel comfortable pulling the Cougar on the highway and at ramps. We live in South Louisiana…so hills arent a major issue except on trips. Your advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks, Dan
I wouldnt want to be pulling a lot with that 4.6 L engine. If you live very close to your favorite lakes, then you might be fine. But, if you plan on doing much traveling, I would opt for the larger engine. That is just a preference for me, but I hate being underpowered. That does sound like a good price for that Ford though. By the way, sounds like you were treated right by Progressive. Hearing positive stories about insurance these days is hard to find. Best wishes for your wifes recovery. I have a friend with a 4.6 ltr Ford F-150. He wont be happy with my assesment but I think its very anemic. I have a Dodge 5.9 L Quad cab and Ive driven both back from Nashville to Ky. Coming up the big hill on I-65 North at the 104 marker, at 70 MPH and no load, his truck shifts down twice on the way up, my 5.9 L goes all the way up with no shifting whatsoever. Size of the motor, torque, and gearing all matter but if your towing, my opinion is youll be happier with the larger motor. Just my 2 cents. I have a 2006 F-150 with the 4.6L engine. I make trips from North Houston to Toledo Bend which is 180 miles or so. There are some pretty good hills along the way. The truck does fine pulling my Pantera Classic. I pull it with the overdrive off (dealer recomended). When I use my wifes Expedition with the 5.4L it does excellent. I wish I could switch the engines. I think you just need to weigh the mileage of the two you are considering. You will get many more years out of the Ford based on the current mileage of the two.
Would you put a 150 hp motor on your cougar? Size matters if you have a choice. Just my way of thinking. harleybasscater
I pull with the 4.6. I have not had any problems so far.
DAN,,WE HAVE A 2006 GMC SLT CREW CAB..BLACK WITH TAN INTERIOR..5.3 MOTOR, Z71 4 WHEEL DRIVE..LOADED ..NAVIGATION ,SUNROOF.. MAYBE MORE THAN YOU WANT TO SPEND..54,000 MILES.CERTIFIED TO 100,000 MILES….. ASKING 18,500.00 ROBIN
Thanks everyone for the responses. This is some more for me to chew on. Robin, thats an awesome deal compared to the F150 when you take into account that the Ford would have to add a warranty for $1500. What part of Bama is this located? Were in Houma, LA. My wife says that as an LSU Tiger-Gal she would expect a lifetime warranty thrown in, since you guys took us to the Wood-shed this year.

I had a 2003 z71 for 5 yrs with the 5.3. I sold it about 2 month ago and got a 2008 4X4 silverado ls with the 4.8 ….. I honestly cant tell any difference and according to chevy its only 25hp difference and alot easier on the wallet.
