Hey guys, leaning toward purchasing my first Bass Cat sometime in the next few weeks. Due to garage limitations a single axle trailer would really work best for me ( I have read about the Pop Axle option). How well will a single axle trailer hold up under a PII over the period of 5 to7 years? Is it too much weight to ask of a single axle to support? Thanks.
You can get a single axle trailer and many of the Classics and PIIs in years past had single axle trailers. There is at least one PII with a single axle trailer that is a 96-97 model for sale on the Boats for Sale section. If at all possible, I would consider a dual axle with the pop axle. I would think that anything larger than a PII, say for example, a PIV, would benefit and need a dual axle. Just my opinion, hope to see pics of a new Cat in your garage soon.96 Eyra/12 Mercury 175 Pro XS with 2015 single axle trailer2017 Victory Gunner
Well with the Pop Axle option in mind, can someone explain how you engage/disengage the axle into the up and locked position?
You just need to make a couple of wheel chocks out of a 4×4 piece of wood, probably 12 inches long. Cut an angle so that you can drive the front tires of the trailer up on it. Only the front tires. This lifts the axle. Then, there is a slide bar located along the front axle by each tire. Just slide bar in place, back trailer down and TA DA! Axle is now lifted up and can be manuevered by hand like a single axle. When ready to travel, pull tires up on chocks, slide the bar back, put pins in slot to secure, back down off chocks and go.96 Eyra/12 Mercury 175 Pro XS with 2015 single axle trailer2017 Victory Gunner
It is as simple as described above.
Thanks guys, it sounds better than sliced bread. Does it put any undue stress on springs or axle to leave the front axle in the up position while the boat is stored in the garage at an angle between trips?
Single axle trailor with a PII will be fine for as long as the boat will last. I have a 2001 Classic that I take to Lake Fork every week (2 hours each way) and the trailor has held up fine. The pop axle is cool and a good option for you but dont be afraid of BCBs single axle on a PII.God Bless, Stephen

I have a brother that has an FTD/250 XS that leaves his in garage at an angle for days/weeks at a time. Also, as mentioned before, it is fine to have a single axle trailer under a PII, they have worked well for years.Last edited by jignpig on January 30th, 2008, 10:31 pm, edited 1 time in total.96 Eyra/12 Mercury 175 Pro XS with 2015 single axle trailer2017 Victory Gunner
Would a double axle trailer under a P-2 be better for the long haul? Of Course.Would a single axle trailer work fine for many years? Of Course.Think of it like this. The P-2 weighs in at less than 1500 pounds dry which is still lighter than some competiters 18 foot rigs. It is definately lighter than most of the competitors 19 rigs. Those competitors put single axle trailers under thier boats all the time and they work fine for many years. They do not make trailers of the same quality as BCB. That is a fact. If thier lower quality trailers hold up under heavier boats, for 5-10 years in many instances, I am sure that BCBs single axle trailer under a P-2 will hold up even better. Another thing to consider is that BCB would not offer you a single axle trailer if they were not 100% sure that it would work just fine and be safe for you to pull down the road. That is just the type of folks they are. They wouldnt offer something that they didnt want to stand behind and wouldnt want to see one of thier customers unhappy or worst have an accident because of an overloaded trailer. I prefer the looks and ride of a dual axle and a trailer with the PoP axle would take care of your needs, but, wouldnt hesitate in a minute to put a single under my Classic if I needed the maneuverability. Good luck with your choice.Chris Coupel Paulina, La.Chris CoupelPaulina, La.
As mentioned above the pop axle is easy to use. I saw one of these up close and personal on a PIV not too long ago and it is slick. Works as described above and you will have the improved looks and the piece of mind of the tandem axle. Its the best of both worlds. I would not hesitate to purchase one. Good luck with your decision. Joe Murray
