I got all the slack out of my steering by removing the fill plug on the dash and turning the steering wheel back and forth a few times and it seem to have tightened it up, before I could grab the motor and move it a few inches. The next day it was back to where I could move the motor with my hand again. I dont see any oil coming out in the steering at the motor, how else could it be bleeding and where to look, Boat it a 2011 Puma FTD Mercury 250ProXS.
You havent really bled the steering until you make sure you fill the system first. So you really need to pull top cap, have buddy pull check valve in the back, turn the appropriate way and fill and then repeat the process the other way untill you dont have air coming out in the back. (teleflex manual)Additionally, no all slack in steering isnt entirely the hydraulics- take it from me. Yes it may have a leak only happening on the water and you will never find it. Have someone who has experience mess with it as filling the reservoir is not going to fix it. Bleeding is required when there is a leak and then unless the leak is repaired it will loosen again. One medium air bubble is a major concern.

This is a dangerous situation for you and those around you.Find the source of air. (leak). I would start at the 90 degree fittings that enter the cylinder at the motor.The bleeding procedure couldnt be easier. It is a two man job and requires a coffee can and one wrench. It can be found all over the Internet. At the moment, I dont feel like googling it so typing that it is easy to find is easier than posting a link… As someone else said, it may be something other than the hydraulics, but if moving the air bubble around like you did when you opened the cap and “bled” the system, worked, it seems the problem is with the hydraulics.Good luck. Thanks VT Yes I found the instructions on filling and purging the system on their website. I will give it a try.
One of the seals could be leaking and not being showing much oil. Run your hand down the cylinder and if you have oil on your hand it is leaking. A buddy and I have replaced several. They arent hard to replace and bleed, but it is a two man job. If you are going to replace them you need to make sure you get the tool to take the seal off. You can find some good deals on the seals and wrench on EBAY.
Not knowing the registration date, it could be under warranty?
