http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0-EKuHCjU4o This was posted on a local site by a guy I have fished against in tournaments. He found this video after finding his jackplate had done the same thing. I realize these are 12″ jackplates and Basscat only uses the 6″, but the failures do not appear to be related to the amount of set back, unless it is also specific to boat/motor type that creates a longer lever effect. It appears this and the local guys boat are both Skeeters. I have checked mine and dont see anything, but I am a little nervous. Has anyone had any similar issues with a 6″ model?
DAMN! Thats bad. I hope there are no issue with the 6″
what kind of boat is that it did not look like a s boat.
Actually BCB has gone to 8″ plates I believe.
lasabre….yes it is an S boat. You can tell by the sponsons but I could also see it on the back of the seats when he went to change to the other side of the motor for the video. I know those plates have got to be made of some pretty strong metal but I have wondered about S and R boats often having the motors set back sooooo far if it would put too much stress on the plate or the transom. If I recall we had a recent question about jackplates and BCB offers either a 6″ or 8″ jackplate. Below is the description given by the guy that posted the video on youtube. This occured while running to my start spot on Lake Champlain on Aug 9th, 2009. The boat is a 2009 Skeeter FX210. Gonna work on making some phone calls today with Skeeter Boats and R & R Manufacturing (maker of the JP). So according to his description he was not towing without a motor support and in the video he does have a transom saver in use. Thats not to say that he hasnt towed without one before. We can do nothing but speculate.Last edited by toledobasser on August 19th, 2009, 9:02 am, edited 3 times in total.Jim EbarbMany, LA (Toledo Bend Lake)2004 Cougar/ 225 OptimaxHumminbird Helix 12 Chirp SI on BalzOut Mount at bowLowrance HDS 7 at bowHumminbird Helix 12 Mega SI on Ram Mount at ConsoleLowrance HDS 8 in dash at console
based on where it broke, it would appear at first glance to be damage incurred by trailering with the motor able to bounce. Notice that appears to be a _big_ yamaha, and it is trying to break off the back. I have seen more split on the front side close to the transom, since that is under more stress than the rear side of the plate. All it takes is tow with no support. Or letting the motor-to-jackplate bolts get loose, etc… Does look a little thin on the aluminum compared to my springfield…2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
This is actually a pretty good plate and the problem is one we have not seen before. Though we do not mess with many 10 and 12″ plates as you all know. In our years since R & R introduced the Slidemaster and machined it for our 6 bolt patter in the 6″ plates we have never seen this issue. Though now we are going to keep an eye out for it. We would be hesitant to say what caused it upon only this image on the video. OT57, if your old Springfield Marine plate is an extruded rolled angle, with another rolled extruded angle piece mated to it in opposing fashion in the original style, and they are pretty tough. Though if it is the other style of multi angles drilled and a flat in between, we have seen several split just like this. BCB
Lake Champlain does not care what kind boat jack, plate, are engine you have if its a bad day your going to break something . We have replaced motor mounts, exhaust housing etc, etc,on boats that have been there .
Answers… It is always towed with a transom saver. It is a Skeeter. It was on a 2003 boat. I have looked at the newer plates on Skeeters and noticed the welds and the size of some of the support structure is significantly bigger and beefier. This happened in a tournament I run every year on Champlain (won this year by a Bass Cat guy). It was windy and as as EK said above, Champlain will find weak points and eat them for breakfast. I went and pulled him out and I didnt think we were going to make it the 1/2 mile to the shop without it falling off in the street. Robs boat gets a TON of use and trailering so I would say it was metal fautigue that did it in.Last edited by VTBassCat on August 19th, 2009, 1:33 pm, edited 1 time in total.Bill Spence St. Albans, VT billspence@yahoo.com http://www.twinstatebassin.com Bass Cat Boats http://www.basscat.com Vexilar Marine Electronics http://www.vexilar.com

It is a 12″ version and has passed muster with a _violent_ 2.5 racing motor on it at one time. Looks as nice as it lasts as well. I had another type where I started to see stress cracking, but it appeared to be some casting issues.2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
