Last weekend i had some damage to the paint (not to the fiberglass) of the keel on my boat. Its right before the eye hook. when i get thre boat up on the trailer i can definatly feel the rough part of it. Is there something i need to do to seal it back up? Patch it? or is it fine as is? Any help would be appreciated
You can apply some gel coat into that area. They have the gel coat at BCB, and hardener will generally come from a retail outlet close to home. WalMart or others often have fiberglass hardener (MEKP catalyst). It appears you may have impacted the roller steel arm with your keel, by being just a tad bit off center. There are new rollers out in 08 that we cut ourselves and allow for that notch to fit around those arms in order to prevent future damage, if you are interested. Of course some folks just run them up onto the dock and that does the nose no good either. BCB
i am pretty sure that the boat did contact the metal part of the roller and i did order one of those no gap ones so it wont happen again. Ill call BCB when they open again and get some of that gel coat you mentianed and pick up some harderer from a store. Thanks for the tip
Thanks guys for all the imput…. i dont think at all its anyones fault but my own. It was one of those most things went wrong tourny with my club haha. Im over it and now have the insert to help curb my learning curb with this boat. I love everything about the boat and BCB who have been more than patient with me with all the calls i have made to them and advice from you all and the site mang. Ill give the gel coat a try and check out that scuff buster stuff. already forgot i did it and have been fishing with my Pa 4 times this last week…with fishing i forget other thing easily
floridaj, It is not a faulty design. There are many factors though design is not a question. There are many factors in the loading of a boat on the trailer, like hull transition to the vee. Angles and how a hull twists to the bow in order io enhance the ride and achieve the buoyancy at rest. There are more factors than just setting a couple of boards on there straight and expecting thinking that stop needs to be here. The bunks are trimmed to 4 7/8″ to allow the board to rest in between the chines, as those chines are closer and more of them than some other brands. The bunks are double padded, chamfered and angled at the front with a radius. The second roller is to keep the bow down in case of a head on collision. It removes some stress from the strap, and helps stop that momentum. And we have seen those bow eyes shaped like a triangle, Yes we have seen them prevent a boat from launching through a vehicle. Imagine the force it would take to make a 15,000 pound U bolt into a triangle. Having loaded many more times on a Sabre than you have, and never have hit that bow stop. On one Sabre model we managed to use a total of 47 gallons of oil in one season. This was back when competing more, and before kids grew some, when business was much simpler. This was on all styles of ramps from all areas of the country. We load literally hundreds of times here at the factory in a variety of situations and this is not a factor on those boats we see here. Dont forget we use these boats too. And some of us use them plenty of times, and more than most. The issue in the bow is the larger 3/8″ bow stop, which a part of the design. It is thicker steel to reduce bending the long arms from impact. The thinker steel allows a more open area for the boat to go in between when you miss. The new rubber end caps are slotted to protect the boat from impacting that area. The rollers we ttried to purchase precut, though no one would mess with it. With us eventually setting up a router table, guide, jig and stop just for this purpose. It only is used for cutting those two rollers on each trailer. So we felt it was something that needed to be addressed. Though on a 2008 Sabre we thought it would have those rollers. We cant remember the transition as to when we did this, though we though it was back in 2007, late season. Just felt a comment was necessary on this one.Last edited by Bass Cat Boats on July 5th, 2008, 2:36 pm, edited 1 time in total.
