Dear BCB or others: I have a question. Please note this is minor in my opinion but if I can fix it I would like to. The starboard side rod box on my 06 Cougar (if it gets rained on pretty hard) gets some water in it. The driver side storage gets some water in it. The port side rod box gets a little in it. Others are OK. I know that it is hard to have boat boxes water proof. However, has anyone ever had this issue. My dealer said they could not find out the “why” on the driver seat storage and put a small hole in that storage area. It rained on the boat while they were waiting on it (I think)to do some minor work. I did tell them about it. But they may have experienced themselves. I did not have them address the other boxes. I dont think they looked at the others. Sometimes I leave the boat hooked up to my pickup instead of taking to boat storage (if I am going the next day or something) and it will get caught in a rain or I wouldnt ever know about it. I usually bail it out and sponge dry and go on. Please note that this is not a “being critical” just wondering about a fix if I can. You know how we guys are trying to fix the small things sometimes. Thanks MooseG
Moose… Here is BCBs recommendation on finding a leak from the FAQ page: http://basscatowners.yuku.com/topic/2103 You will find them and you can seal them. The only thing that might be a deal is if you have the nose of the boat pointed down the bilge water can get in those rod lockers…not much can be done here except to keep that nose high. I will let BCB comment on the dealer deal. Good luck on finding the leak! Judd Lasiter
Judd: About the dealer deal. Is there something they should or should not have done? I will read the BCB post. In the past on boats I did some of my own thinngs. I am waiting unitl the warranty goes out to avoid any conflict issue about me doing something. I see this site as a way to help me and the dealer on some things by seeing some issues discussed here. I told them about the seat storage area but not the rod box. It has been a long time since water was in rod box. After picking it up, I noticed some in it. If they store the boat and it is nose down and they dont have the automatice bilge on, the water can get into boxes? Moose
BCB has mentioned several times to find the leak and not drill your own drains. Having said that the nose down even with the auto bilge on can get water in the nose before it gets high enough to kick the float up. Never store a boat with the nose down…even if it on the truck…park the opposite direction. JL
MooseG, JL has given you the link to the how to find it advice. We do not suggest drains as most dont know what drains into a sealed area and weights the boat down. We have seen this before. The center is a drain and you must get the water out when it is in the bilge using manual pumps. Auto is for fishing and overnighting in a dock. The small amount of water in the sump also also can go forwards all the way to the nose like it was forced (hydrauliced) when you brake your vehicle or back off your throttle running. The water the jettisons all the way to the nose and splashes both or either direction. Then runs around to either rod storage. The center storages can only get water through the top and from a seal leak or loose fit. The trim seal may be off on one area or the latch may be loose. Make sure your handles fit into the lock and the rubber o ring seals are in place. You can also use plumbers grease to seal the lock itself. Follow the directions and you will get the drip found.
Thanks for all the input. What about the little hole that the dealer made in the driver seat storage. Leave it or plug. Is this going to let water into the storage area at some time? I mean none of these have really been a big problem. You know it is a boat and water is going to get every where at some point in time. MooseG
No way to know on that little hole. We can only imagine.
Thanks for input and comments. MooseG
