06 Sabre with 3 battery setup. The batteries I have had in the boat are the originals (Interstate) and they are over 2 years old now. I think it is time to replace them as I dont get the life out of them that I used to. The AZ summers are hard on batteries here, so about every two or three years I usually end up replacing them. My question is, what would you recommend (size and brand) for my boat. Just looking for recommendations. Thanks, JasonJason Desertdweller.com Get Your Bass in the Boat!
Dont get trolling batteries any smaller than 27 group. If I remember correctly you dont have an Opti so I would do all 3 the same. Seems Merc wants that 1000CCA for the crankin battery and the only one I have seen is a group 24. Saying that…the brand deal is a Chevy/Ford/Dodge deal. Come to think of it if you have had that good luck with you current batteries I would replace them with the same thing. 2-3 years is about max from my experience, that is without going to the high $ battery and I am not sure they are worth it seeing how you can almost buy 2 of the cheaper batteries for what 1 of the expensive ones cost. Just my 2 cents…
For the TM batteries, I get the highest Reserve Capacity (RC) I can fit in the trays/available boat space. In many cases that will be a group 27 battery, however different manufacturers have different RC ratings for the same physical size so their spec. sheets need to be consulted. Trojan makes an excellent high-RC battery, but they raised their prices to a ridiculous extent last year! Many boat dealers around here use Interestates these days. In the past Ive looked at Optima and Voyager batteries (which have a lot of fan support and are purported to be long-life) but passed on them because they are lacking RC capacity.Just for what it is worth, Ive owned boats for more than 40 years and my average battery life too is probably 24 – 30 months and that includes a couple of sets of the high $$ AGM batteries. For the cranking battery, I use a battery specifically designed for engine cranking, usually this will be a dual-purpose battery, not a straight deep-cycle. You should consult your engine manual to get the minimum battery requirements for cranking your specific engine. C.
Depends if you are running a 36V or 24V trolling motor. If running a 36V I would get them all the same and put group 31s in there. If running a 24V then I would put a group 27 for cranking and 2 of the 31s for the trolling motor. Trojan makes what is called a group 27 and the model # is 1100MF-55. It is made for these newer motors. That is what I would put in there !!! Take Care and Good Luck JW
Thanks for the info so far. You are correct porkchop, its an XR6 150.Jason Desertdweller.com Get Your Bass in the Boat!
I use the Delco Voyager sealed batteries group 27 (3) and have had good luck with them in my P2 and 200 Merc EFI. With that being said, when you make your choice of brand you might “ask nicely” for a discount if you buy 3 batteries at once. This got me 10% off when I bought mine. Everything helps these days. Batteries are about life and cycles. If you dont use them, then they have less cycles. If you do use them, then you still have a limited life based on the number of cycles. The better batteries protest they will go about 300 cycles. BCB

I have been looking around and ran across these. Anyone have any experience with this type of battery? The Optima. I have never used one, but have seen them before. They make some outstanding claims, just not sure how accurate they are in their claims. http://www.1st-optima-batteries.com/Jason Desertdweller.com Get Your Bass in the Boat!
1) Havent used them, a few friends have and likedem, just saw them today at my local Costco for $147 to $159 2) Thanks for the info on the online fishing license. 3) What is the layout of your batteries? My 06 has the 2 deep cycle batteries on the drivers side up against the transom. The starter battery is on the passenger side, almost up against transom. Have been told that is the exact opposite of what it should be: switch sides and move the batteries closer to the livewell bulkhead, away from transom. Thanks, John PS Costco has house brand – Kirkland – group 34/78 DC batteries for $72.00Last edited by SilvrTour on January 18th, 2008, 2:42 am, edited 1 time in total.
