I have recently purchased my first (2004) bass cat cougar and the speed o meter doesnt work. I checked the hole on the lower unit and it is clean, but there is no tube going up the lower unit through the back of the boat. I looked for a hose but cant find one. The gauge only has a multi-wiring harness connection on it. is there someplace this hose connects after it enters through the back of the boat, or does the hose connect to a sensor that relays the water pressure to the guage. I would like to get it working, due to the fact that I like things to work. any help or diagrams would be greatly appreciated.
If it is a Merc, and you have Smart Craft, then there is a sensor in the cowling. The hose runs to this sensor usually on the right side. It has Tge hose slip connected into the end straight in line. You can also connect GPS to the speedo if it is Smart Craft. If not then there should be a hose plugged into the speedo that covers it in line all the way through.
Probably disconnected and GPS used to read speed- a lot less trouble in the long run!!BAYOU BANDIT
first off, what does the sensor look like in the cowl? there is no hose at all running up from the tipot to the boat. second how far into the cowl will the sensor be and what is the best was to access it. third if it is hooked to the gps how can i tell and will the gauge register the speed and how cn i hook it up to the gps. i have a merc optimax 250xs and not sure of the guage type, but there is no hose going to the gauge and you can select from the fuel amount to the oil amount and scroll through several different menus. the push button controls are at the bottom of the guage.
Smart Craft Gauges have the Option and these are the ones with the LCD screen and touch buttons, which it sounds like you have. The SC Manual on the Merc Smart Craft Site online, or if you have your engine papers would have a schematic on this.
same trouble with mine when i bought the boat. brought it to the dealership. hose was rolled up and stored in the lower part of motor. cost me $45.00 as this was not covered under warranty.
Ok, I have determined I have a smart craft guage with no hose in the back, just wiring harness. I have a LCX-19 C sonar/gps. Can anyone tell me how to check to see if the gps is connected to the guage and if it isnt can someone tell me how to connect the gps and guage. If possible a wiring diagram would be helpful. I downloaded the information for the smart craft guage and the sonar/gps and have been trying to figure it out with no luck. Another question after I connect the gps to the guage, will the dial indicator work off the gps speed. Thanks for the help and the information everyone has provided. This is my fisrt Bass Cat and I wish I had a long time ago.Last edited by goldtip2 on July 24th, 2009, 11:26 pm, edited 1 time in total.
It will work off of the GPS and be fine. The unit will have to be on obviously. The wiring on that 19 we cant help you with here. That is a Lowrance part, and it is simple, though those two wires have from memory different colors over years. Try the on line resource at Mercury or Lowrance. BCB

Boat safe and enjoy the outdoors Allan oh yeah if anyone can tell me how to add a pic for my avitar, I would appreciate it, I cant figure it out.
