Hey everyone.I am the proud new owner of a 98 Jag.I was sold on bass cat by all of the positive comments I have read all over the world wide web. While I have seen a few around my area (South Louisiana ,Ranger /Skeeter country)over the years and they always intrigued me,my first actual ride in one was when I drove to Table Rock lake to test drive my rig that I purchased from Mike Ruck,a first class individual.I didnt want a boat like “everyone else” and I can tell you already that I will never drive anything other than a Cat.This is my first high performance bass boat so I may have a stupid question now and then while I try to figure this thing out.Last trip out my speedo stopped working .Upon putting the boat back on the trailer I noticed abou a 1 1/2 foot piece of tube missing right around midways up from the lower unit.I am asuming this is my problem. My question is can this have possibly harmed anything..,and because it appears to be such a clean cut it almost looks like it may have been a splice,is this possible. So can I splice it, if so what should I use and where should I look to find it or should I replace the entire length of the hose. There are no Bass Cat dealers any wheres near me but a little advice from you guys will steer me in the right direction. Proud to have joined the family,DennyO
Usually what you get is a 18″ piece of tubing that goes into the lower unit, installed by the engine manufacturer. Then the speedo tube runs from the speedo back and connects to that piece of tube with a double-barb connector. First thought is that the speedo tube is missing. Or the tube that goes down to the pitot opening in the front of the gearcase is missing. Either is an easy fix and wont cost much. And you didnt hurt a thing, other than making a small fountain of water as you run down the river. First step is to figure out what is missing. Do you have tubing that comes out of the lower unit right around the steering pivot bracket? If you look carefully you can see the shift shaft that is in that same opening, and the tubing goes into the same area and it is not particularly easy to see. If you have tubing coming out of the lower unit, you need to find the end of the matching tube from the speedo. If it will reach, reconnect and you are set. I generally use a hair-dryer to warm the tube up before slipping it onto the barbed connector so that it will go on easier and the tubing will then contract and “grab” the barb better. If there is a piece missing, you will have to scare up two barbs to splice in a piece, or go the painful route of replacing the tube from the speedo all the way back…2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
The closest dealer to you is probably Gonzales. The speedo tube probably came unbarbed. There should be a barb that is splined on opposing ends in a tube. One end comes out of the front of the gearcase right by the shift shaft, and you can see the shift shaft inside the front of the U strap. And the opposing end runs up into the cowling and out the cowl to the speedo. The boat you have has a BP-101 dash unit and the PDF to that is on the home page if you do not have the manual. Any other questions you have just hop on here and pound away at those keys. BCBLast edited by Bass Cat Boats on July 2nd, 2008, 1:55 am, edited 2 times in total.
Denny – You will love your Jag. Ive had mine since new (she is 00 model) and love it as much today as when I pulled her home. Congrats and welcome to the family.
Thanks for the quick replys.I do have both ends the end coming out of the lower unit and also the end coming from the speedo located. They do not reach each other to reconnect so I think I will try the splice idea.I am about two hours from Gozales so I will try to find something localy.I am not quite sure on how the tube should be routed to prevent this from happening again…any tips…?
Any Mercury Dealership should have the hoses and barbs. BCB
