My fishing buddy and I took a multiday trip over to Tenkiller Lake. We fished hard Sunday thru Thursday. I live right inbetween Bull Shoals and Norfork, but I like to see and fish new places too. 10K fishes a lot like Bull Shoals, but every place has its nuances. The lake itself and the surrounding areas are just beautiful. We hit it at a great time with everything being fresh and green and the lake a few feet high. They were pulling it down the whole time we were there which I cant imagine helping us, but it did not hurt us too badly. The lake has a lot of Smallies, a ton of Spotted Bass, and it is supposed to have a majority of LMB. We mainly stayed main lake and tried to catch a 5 pound smallie. We came close (4 lb 12 oz) and caught a bunch of other quality Smallies. We also caught a large pile of Spots. We had good size on our LMB, but not that many of them. Oklahoma has no minimum length on Spots and No Creel limit on them. Locals claim they are keeping every one they catch, but like coyotes they are hanging in there. The lake has a 13-16 inch protected slot for Smallies and LMB. The lake has plenty of good boat launches. I prefer to trailer close and minimize my boat gas use, but the lower 2/3s of the lake can be quickly covered with todays boats. We used 5 different launches on the five days we fished there, lol. It is a COE lake so my COE pass covered that. There are also non COE launches, but I did not try any of those. Bass Cat Boats was well represented there. We saw a handfulof BassCats on the lake. They sure are pretty boats on the water. We fished out of my buddys Legend 191. My Cat stayed home. He had the shorter haul to the lake. This was my first trip to 10K, but likely not my last. We stayed at Cookson Store and cabins. They have cabins and rooms. Nothing overly posh, but had everything we needed at half the cost of the places on the water. I would recommend them and I would use them again without hesitation. You can reach by phone at (918) 457-5171We did hear that the lake gets really busy with pleasure boaters as soon as school gets out and stays that way until school is back in so keep that in mind.
Great report. Thanks for posting. Tenkiller is on my short list – actually its a long list comprised of any lake in the country that has smallies!
This is a very nice report Ham66 and thanks for sharing.
Thanks guys. The lake is flat full of fish. We caught channel cats everyday while bass fishing. As many as 4 in one day. Mostly on jigs, but one ate a jerkbait! We also caught a bunch of White Bass while bass fishing. No lure is safe on the lower 1/3 of the lake. We had at least 20 Smallies over 18 inches and a whole lot over 13 inches. So many good chunky Smallies. If you are open to the idea, its pretty easy to get some > 12 inch Spots for the dinner table. Im still super excited about our trip, but with the OI on Bull next year, Im not sure when I will head to Tenkiller again.
Tenkiller is one of my favorite lakes. The smallies there are insane. Living in central Arkansas – smallies are few. Drive 3 hours NW and theyre amazing. In the spring time, 40-50 fish days are common.
I am a Tenkiller junkie. Most weekends you can find my yellow Cat somewhere on the lake. I drive by several good largemouth fisheries to fish for brownies. It does get busy during warm weather…thats when I switch to night fishing. If you see me, come by and say hello!!
Our numbers were so good that Im afraid people wouldnt believe them. Lets just say that 100 fish days a very doable. Pretty boat adchunts. My cat has a lot of yellow on it too.
