Starting Battery replacements

I have an 09 Mercury ProXs 250 on my Puma Ftd. My question is how often do most of you replace the starting battery? I replacedthe original battery at 1 yr 10 months (Interstate) after it left me stranded. At that time I decided to buy a more robust battery (at least I thought it would be) and purchased a Optima 31 series. This one went out sunday at 1 yr 11 months. Both times the batteries were always charged and left with a full charge. Obviously was winter time and cold. I realize that the Optimax requires a lot of power but just dont want to be stranded again and trying to get input from others on replacement intervals. Still on original trolling batteries (Interstates) and going on 4yrs.tksBig Al

Big Al, There is a chart of suggested batteries in the FAQ section. We try to make cranking batteries simple. The folks at Optima are apparently very Nice folks, though we are not fond of the Spiral Cell technology which saves weight. It is expensive technology we are not sold on for marine.1. Go 31 Series if you can.2. Go AGM if you can.3. Get the heaviest in the brand you prefer. Last week the Sears PM31s were on sale for around 225.00 bucks….Dont know if that sale is still going or not…

From the FAQ page:We did not put them in any particular order and we would suggest you consider the Sears as being the most readily available. Sears PM31 will be the only one you need to go with. I would stay away from the cabelas 31AGM

Is there a particular reason not to consider Optima batteries? I ask because Ive had no issues and gotten 3+ years out of mine. I fully expect to get at least one more season out of them, if not more. Thats the only reason I ask. Im currently running the 34 series for a start battery because it meets the recommended requirements (800 CCA, 1000 MCA) Mercury states for the Optimax. I would like to step up to 27 or 31 series to gain more reserve capacity for my new electronics. Although, the 31 is a little hotter (900 CCA) than recommended by Mercury. I dont know if makes a difference. Should I really look at other options?

I have run the optima 31 for a Cranker in my last 3 boats. I have never had a problem an I have put them to the test. It also stands as the third battery on my troller. Electronics ( 3 units), live wells going all day( keeping my usual 9lb limit alive), an has never been slow to slap the 250 over. I am currently rigging my new boat out the same, except I did add the #4 battery this time cause I added pole to the load.

The 31 is likely the way Ill go when I add the 2 HDS units this summer. Thanks for the info.
