2011 250 HO with lower geared lower unit on a 2003 Cougar FTD. All you guys running 27 Furys tell me how fast you are running at 5800 RPMs in a cougar or puma. I turned mine today at 5800 to 5900 and was running 74 mph. Ive got throttle left and am thinking I just need to strap on a pitchier wheel, but I want to make sure my numbers sound right. I really thought that a Fury at 5800 would be pushing my cougar at near 80 if I could turn it that strong. If something doesnt add up to you guys, Im going to lower the motor as BCB has suggested. I just dont think it is too high, because my little brain cant understand how it all works. some of you have said that new lower geared unit is designed to be high on the transom…Ive got good water pressure, good control, strong bite at take off, WOT and in tight turns, so too high just isnt registering with me. Any help is appreciated. Id like to get this dialed in, so I can focus on putting fish in the livewell rather than props on ebay.
No, you need to bury the engine more to get forward motion. The numbers tell us your too high on the transom.
Evinrude informs everyone to raise the engine based on the ability of the gear case to retain water pressure. They forget there is boat hull design, propeller efficiency, propeller design, load and more in this equation. We have never heard an Evinrude representative refer to limitations on any of these factors, only what their gearcase is capable of. So remove the gear case and try running it by itself, no boat, no motor, no prop… Just pull it off and take it fishing. That might sound like a different answer for Bass Cat, though we are very tired of this reference when we repeatedly tell people that an HO case is not able to run at the heights we hear touted by some people.Last edited by Bass Cat Boats on April 10th, 2011, 1:01 am, edited 1 time in total.
Hmmmmmmm could the “saltyness” In this opinion have to do with Ricks accident back in 2007? the Lightning case which is no longer used can go up as the Yamaha case, flyswatter has documented this alot!!!!!!Your Signature …
Why would anyone want to argue with Rick and why would anyone argue the numbers. The 28 Trophy you have is capable of 82 @ 6K with a 250 Pro XS. The rest I will stay out of.
Phil I honestly did mean that to Come Off as a Jerky comment. Its weird how the Bass Forums are very Edgy and aggresive. Hell we got guys saying their is NO Shortage, Me saying Evinrudes dont break, You saying Mercs dont break, and All the rest. The Lightning DEFINITELY had some issues with Etecs, not so much with the 3liter and 2.6. I respect the HELL out of both RPs and JP, they taught me alot, and I will never forget that. BCB, i typed before I read, a Brannon traight and Went past the question. My sincerest apologies….Hey Phil, Ive sold a bunch of Pro XS so ya know, and they are damn cool, EZ to color with also….BW
Hey Lunker- I, like BCB complained, was told that raising the plate was the solution for the speed issues in the M2 1.85 case. This info was not from someone that knows BCB hulls nearly like BCB but it was from someone who raced boats for some time, has driven mine at length, and works on quite a few BRP blocks and lower units. My “internet experience” like yours I imagine at this point is this- I am not convinced that the new case has anywhere near the performance of the L2 at 1.71 or 1.86 versions. My understanding is that all BRP did to create that unit was create a new unit with existing magnum gears and a gear to adjust the ratio that already existed(1.71). I was told it was a simple thing to do and was offered to the same on my L2 to improve the holeshot when its hot and boat is loaded in mine.I would love to see your water pressure, top gps speed, and rooster tail heights at a number of jackplate positions.I think you outta start low as the bossman recommended with the 27 fury and write down each. With BCB permission it would seem that at some point you should lose speed, drop water pressure too low, or get a rooster above cowling height. All would seem negative to me.If the 27 fury will turn around 5850 you should be near the right prop. As BCB stated 74 with a 27 pitch at 1.85 is 10% slip and too high.Hope this helps some.I hate to kick this dead horse as its only got a few legs left but if BRP doesnt clean house and get their CA-CA together (with the Rotax guys having taken over recently) itll be worse. I love mine but have exceptional access to help-C.O.D. Jr. III
Dude, Youve tried at least three props and ignored the best advice. This advise was the easier than switch props around trying to figure out the prop issue. DROP THE FREAKING MOTOR!!It is easy and it may work for you. Just do it and then come back to us with ypur results.Irv
turning the wrench now
bworner, We started to let this ride, though quite simply it compromises people and we have long advocated lower engine heights. I really dont want to question anyones hands on experience or ability on line, though telling someone to raise an engine, and that it will keep water pressure, is not taking all things into consideration. This is what BRP has done in the past, and we continue to try and inform individuals otherwise. Thus the post trying to get an engine lowered, instead of doing everything opposite and other than what was suggested and seeing the same results. You have known quite well our opinion on lowering engines when Ivan attended the first show with you and the BRP staff person (O.) was there, whom you are familiar with. This was long prior to any situation mentioned. We are getting more out of these heavy hulls than about any other company in our class. And we want to see plenty of propeller and case bite with loaded rigs pushing the 4,000 pound mark or more. When your are trying to keep 4000 pounds moving forward with only a wedge in the water good bite might have some importance on that wedge. The Eyra is a totally different hull in many aspects and it is not a Puma or Cougar. And we still tell everyone to watch their engine heights.
