Went to load the boat on the trailer tonight and had to back up to go around the dock and when I shifted from reverse to forward it felt a little loose and with some gas I continued to back up. It will not come out of reverse and the shifter has nothing but throttle effect in reverse and forward setting. Hoping the something just came loose. The whole thing has felt wobbly for about a month and it was reall easy to go straight into reverse when shifting back into neutral from forward. Does this sound like the shifter getting loose and I can fix it my self?????? I do not think that it is in the motor……I hope that I am rightAny help would be appreciatedElwoodElwood…..Bass Cat Proud

Sounds like a cable retainer in the control box. Check at the engine first, under the cowling.

Just check under the cowling first to see if the cable and arm is moving. If the cable is not moving disconnected then we are going with the retainer.

On my Mercury XR6 the retainer cap kept turning and letting the cable come off. You can see it easily after removing the cowling and moving the shifter while you watch. You must have long arms or a buddy. If that is your issue, put it back on and tighten the nut that holds it. It is a fairly common problem with this model.

Tighten the screw cap nut a wee bit.
