most modern chargers will turn off and monitor when the batteries are charged up. You can also use a timer.

I hooked my on board chargers to 7 day outdoor timers. I have a 3 bank charger and a 1 bank charger. It works great and the power is only on for a short period of time each week.

The best answer would be to check out what kind of charger is on the boat. Once you figure out the make and model, then do a google search for the manufacturer and see what they say about power draw, trickle charging or if it shuts itself off. Its one of those depends kind of answers my students hate, but it is just that.I have a Minn Kota 330 that will monitor and trickle chargs as ischnell describes. I generally have my boat plugged in all the time and havent seen any changes really to my normal power usage at the house. Or follow BCBs advise. They know a little more than most of us here.- Chaz

I know a lot of folks keep their boat plugged-in 24-7….not me!Prefer to plug my charger into a $10 outlet timer and schedule it to turn on twice a week for a couple of hours in the evening when Im home.Call me paranoid, but anything mechanical / electrical can FAIL, and I dont want to come home to see fire trucks hosing my garage down.If you have wet-cell batteries, check the water level often, esp in the summer (hot) months.Too often Ive checked my batteries and found five cells fine, with the sixth cell needing several ounces of water. AGM batteries will certainly minimize maintenance requirements, but wont necessarily keep a charger from burning up.My .02

As Fishmagnet has stated if you are using regular wet cell batteries I would check the water level every 2 weeks to 1 month depending on how you have your timer set. If you dont use a timer I would check them weekly. Only use distilled water in your batteries ( Not tap water ), and do not overfill, only to just over the plates.

http://www.flow-rite.com/…ll-pro-fill-rv/qwik-fillflow rites quick fill battery maintenance system is super ! as far as leaving the charger plugged in, i dont think it would be wise if your boat is elsewhere. i had a buddy have his boat completely ruined due to a lightning strike that ended up frying his batteries because the boat was plugged into an outlet. the boat was stored with a cover, and by the time he realized what happened, his boat and entire contents were “totalled” by the insurance company. one of the batteries burst, and the acid fumes were contained by the cover. rods, reels, tackle, spare troll motor…you name it, it was ruined.just something else to consider.
