SURGE BRAKE AND LIGHTING ISSUE

06 chevy silverado. 02 P3. All lights ( turn, brakes…..) on truck are working correctly. All running lights are on when truck lights are on. However i dont have any brakelights or turn signals on the trailer. Plus the trailer brakes are engaging when backing up. Looking for some advice before i dive into this this evening. Leaning towards a truck issue ?? Thanks for any insight you may provide !

Brakes locking says you are not getting +12v on the blue wire when you put truck in reverse. No turn signals/brake lights say the two turn signal wires are not getting +12v either.I would start in the middle, which is at the trailer wiring harness connector. Have someone put truck in reverse and with a volt meter, measure voltage from the pin going to the blue wire on the trailer and the ground (white wire) pin. If you have +12v there, the problem is in the trailer wiring. If you dont have +12v between blue and white, I would look for a fuse first. If you find one that is blown, you need to check the trailer wiring to see what shorted and blew the fuse.You say your running lights on trailer are working. This suggests your trailer ground is OK. Since both brake/turn and reverse are not working on the trailer, it is doubtful that all of those wires have failed, unless one shorted and blew a fuse in the truck.This should not be very hard to track down.

First thing to check is the fuses in the Truck. My 06 GMC Yukon, and current 2016 Yukon both had dedicated fuses for trailer different trailer lights.

And after you get done checking the fuses, when your checking your trailer wiring look inside the tongue, if you have the pivot tongue to see if you crushed the wires inside the tongue. My 07 P2 that I owned I did that on and finally tracked it down using a volt meter and a bunch of time. Pretty easy check, slide your hand down the wire and if you feel them crushed, well that probably is the problem. Of course it sounds easy at the time, it was not at the time, especially since I was wanting to be on the lake.

All newer trucks, that I know of, have dedicated fuses for the trailer leads. So just because the turn signals on your truck work, it may very well have a blown fuse on the trailer side.

Double check your grounds too, make sure your harness didnt get pinched in the folding trailer neck.

Well that was relatively easy fix. Checked back of plug with voltmeter and was getting 0 volts on the backup light terminal. On to checking all fuses on the truck. All were good. Bought a new plug since the old one was not locking in very well. Tried it and same result. Noticed that the old one was really dirty. Opened up the socket and sprayed with some brake cleaner. Bingo !! Dirty connectors. Wish i would have checked that First !!Thanks to all for the advice
