I was out on a small lake yesterday where you can only idle your big motor. I didnt notice it at first but my tach was showing 2000 rpm at idle. It definitely wasnt running at that speed.(no problem putting it into gear, etc.) I know in the past it reads about 600 or so at idle. The motor is a 2004 3.0 L 200 hp Mercury. No hot foot. Is there something I can look at or is time to take it to the service guys??

Same thing happened to mine( currently still does it ) Called BCB and they told me to take a voltage reading off the back of the Tach. (analog tach), problem is it is only off at mid throttle to WOT sometimes as much as 1200 rpms. So when testing it at idle with the engine running it shows that it is working properly, dealer will not take my word for it that the tach is not working correctly. BCB told me it was a mercury warranty issue. I guess I will just live with it, or spend the 80-100 dollars to replace the tach myself.

JSLaw,can you tell me what I should be reading on the tach at idle or is it different for different motors or should I call someone?? Thanks for your input.

jslaw, That is a standard Mercury part, and the tach should have warrantied on the original purchase date. We would be glad to assist in a few days. Right now we are pretty busy trying to catch up in parts, though is a couple days or a week we may be able to help out. BCB

BCB- thanks for the reply and I will look forward to possibly have this corrected. I can wait, its been that way for about a year now. WeeMan- I cant remember exactly the voltage reading but I want to say it should be below 12.2 VDC at idle but not lower then 11.4. Do not mark my words on this, it was about a year ago but those numbers are sticking out in my head.
