Pardon me if Im not quite following how the pieces fit together. I have an 04 PIV with a 3.0L 200 EFI that I had mounted on the older model Detwiler all-in-one hydraulic which eventually popped the rods holding the hydaulic cylinder. So I sent it off to Detwiler to rebuild it after they redesigned the way it was put together; but anyway its still in the box they shipped it back to me in and Im still running the interim 6″ SlideMaster Manual jackplate. My question is, what is the best/correct mounting bracket for mounting a Talon to my PIV for these jackplates (Im hoping the mounting is the same for both jackplates)? From what Im reading, the best option is to mount it between the jackplate and the transom using the Talons 9″ setback mounts 9SLR and/or 9PLR. Im presuming that amongst other benefits this mount and mounting method minimizes the en-route wobble. I have read that the mount comes with a spacer for the other side if dual mounts for two Talons are not done, which is the route Im going partly because I have the old style fixed mount boarding ladder (and like it), partly because of the location of the pump-out and bilge outlets, and partly beacuse I dont want to sink double into it while I see just how much Ill use it on these local highland reservoirs.I really like the self contained Talon design though and am entertaining ideas of switching it back and forth between my PIV and my Supreme river boat (mounting it on the bow somehow and using a tilt bracket) so I no longer have to position the boat out of the current and in the very eddies I need to be fishing. Anchors can be very dangerous in this situation and after some evaluation, the Talon may be an excellent and much safer substitute.Anyway, I digress… Are these 9SLR and/or 9PLR the correct mounts for this method and how does the BassCat 6-hole jackplate design work with the Talon mount and spacer when mounting between the jackplate and the transom? Is an extra spacer needed for the additional holes? Is between the jackplate and transom the best/recommended/most stable mounting method for the PIV?Thanks much for any input and even more for any pictures. OK, To simplify the question:What is the preferred method for mounting the Talon on an 04 BassCat Pantera IV with both a slidemaster manual and a Detwiler All-in-One Hydraulic jackplate and 3.0L Mercury 200 EFI with the old style external boarding ladder on the port side? a) between the jackplate and transom, b) between the jackplate and motor, c) mounted to the jackplate itself (I dont want to have to drill and tap), d) other. For the recommended method, what is the correct setback, 3″/6″/9″ and/or mount numbers? If the answer is “a) between the jackplate and transom,” How is the 6-hole jackplate handled? Are extra spacers needed?Im looking to get it ordered so please let me know what I need for mounts. Thanks much. DekeLast edited by Deke on April 19th, 2012, 9:55 pm, edited 1 time in total.
Pardon us, though this was a moving target and BCB has not sold a recent Talon. They worked on the bracket options and from there they have mounted some. The 3″ or 6″ offsets are the question and most prefer the side mount to the Slidemaster plates. Some use the sandwich plates and the preference is yours.
OK, thanks for the response and if anyone pops up with firsthand experience Id appreciate it if youd post it. With the mounts being $200+ each its kinda hard to just shotgun purchase several of them to try and then use the best fit. If I have to pull the motor, then I was going to go ahead and swap out the slidemaster for the rebuilt Detwiler again but dont really want the Talon to go up and down with the jackplate as it would if mounted between the jackplate and the motor (which would be the 3″ setback). So if mounted between the 6″ jackplate and transom, 6″ + 3″ gives the 9″ setback option but Im concerned about the MK sandwich brackets allowing for the 6-hole Basscat custom jackplate hole pattern. So if side mounted to the Detwiler, where on the jackplate would the holes need to be drilled? Thanks again and please let me know if anything turns up.
Hey Deke, I am contemplating the same thing. I also have a PIV (06) with the boarding ladder port so I was going to mount a talon on the starboard side. I was going to use the side mount to the manual jack-plate. Not sure about the set back. As far as I can tell I should get the 9″ one, but this is just a best guess. I thought there would be more people here who have done this, but I guess not. Please keep us informed on what mount worked (or didnt) it will save me some time and aggravation. Good Luck.-Joe P
Im in the same shape, Im putting 2 on a 99 Couger. Im going to try to build my on brackets and mount them between the motor and the jackplate. If I side mount them on a slide master plate should I cut out for the jackplate bolts or use them to mount the brackets?
I have 2 on my 2011 Puma, they are 3″ set back and are between the motor & detwillwer jackplate. Jamey Caldwell has 9″ set back but his are between the transom and jackplate. So it comes down too do you want them to move with the jackplate or be stationary. Hope this helps.
Please feel free to email me if I dont answer each question or if you need more [email protected] recommend the 9″ setback for side mounting. The 3″ will work if you mount the same as Izzy did (between the motor and jackplate) This is how BCB mounts them at the factory if you want a sandwich mount.I would talk to someone at Detwiler if you plan to drill for a side mount. UPDATE: BCB states you must use all 6 bolts on the transom or you will void your lifetime warranty. Current options if you are running a Detwiler and want a Talon. 1: Mount between MOTOR and JACKPLATE (Talon will move up and down with Hyd plate) 2: I am talking to Minn Kota about making a BCB specific mount or spacer to allow for 6 bolt pattern for transom mount. Im trying to work this issue with BCB and Minn Kota to get the best solution to this questionGetting ready to order a new boat and looking at the Atlas Hyd plate as it has holes in the side for side mounting. Keep you posted on what I figure out. JameyLast edited by Caldwellj on May 20th, 2012, 1:09 pm, edited 3 times in total.
I recently installed dual Talons on my 02 Classic. I have them mounted on the 6″ side mount A arm brackets. They set right against the bumper no extra holes were needed on the Slidemaster jack plate. They were a big investment but I am well pleased with the fit and their performance.
Well, Im no closer to having an answer than I was when I started. I KNOW I can do what ISSY1 did and sandwich mount between the jackplate and motor with 3″ setback with the 3SLR mount and included spacers. Id like to sandwich mount between the transom and jackplate but the bottom holes are exposed and I want to keep using the 6-hole setup. If the 9SLR mounting plate was just 2-3″ longer then it would work but its not. Also, the spacers are 2-3″ too short to span the distance from one side to the other between the bottom 2 holes so I cant do that to cover the holes either. I reckon I could buy another spacer kit and cut them in two and put half on each side but I really dont want to do that either for looks if nothing else.So I asked Minn Kota what they recommend and heres their reply:”The sandwich bracket should have the holes necessary to work with the hole pattern already on your boat. With regard to the jackplate; my understanding is that the J type bracket can be used on that brand of jackplate but it does require drilling the bracket; since there is drilling required you will want to confirm that it is functional with Detwiler.”So I contacted Detwiler and heres their reply:”I cannot recommend installing the Minn Kota Talon on your Detwiler jack plate. I recommend that you mount on the transom as shown in the videos Minn Kota supplies on their website.”I know that they deal with hundreds of emails and phone calls a day but since most requests are for the same questions they could have a catalog of detailed answers that they could cut and paste from to help explain why. As it is with no real information provided Im just forced to assume that their position is one based off of either product liability and/or warranty exposure avoidance and not for any meaningful reason. Since Im way out of warrany, its not a real concern for me but a legitimate safety issue is another matter though.Theres lots of room in the 8″ Detwiler All-In-One to drill and mount the j9SLR mounts to the side up near the transom. The thickness of the aluminum on that part of the jackplate is about 1/2 that of the SlideMaster though so the concern is if drilling holes would weaken the strength of the plate enough to matter. Theres enough room to even add a backing plate on the inside too, but that still leaves the possibility of stress fractures in the side of the jackplate; But then again, they have their own big holes in the sides by design. Not being an engineer I just dont know.
