Did a little prop testing the other day on my 08 P II. The props were both 26p one a Fury the other a Tempest. The temp was 33 with 15 to 20 mph winds and snowing. The boat was light with a 1/2 tank of gas and no gear and 2 people. Both props topped out about the same Fury/74.7 Tempest/74.6. The Fury liked the plate a little lower and less trim also. It also seemed to have more bite and turned better once trimmed out. The Tempest makes the boat feel a little loose, and likes all the trim you can give it, and also makes the boat easier to drive on the top end though it doesnt turn as well and almost wants to lose bite when the boat falls onto plane, but doesnt. Both props have an awesome holeshot the Tempest may be a touch better in that area. The load doesnt seem to make alot of difference on this boat. I have seen 74.5 with a full load and 3/4 tank of gas and 7 gallons in the saddle tank at 50 degrees with just myself in the boat and 74 consistently. Thinking of taking my 36v MK off and putting on my 24v MG to lose more weight, but its alot of work and will have to drill new holes for the mount. Not sure if its worth all that. Also I hit the limiter with the Tempest but not the Fury so I would like to try a 27 Tempest and a 25 Fury. Anyway I thought some of you might find this comparison interesting if I find more props to try Ill add to this.Flyswatter, I still wanna try yours when you can turn loose of it.
I just ordered a 26″ Tempest for my Classic/200hp Optimax, and hope to have it by the weekend. Your achieved performance with both props is outstanding! What is your engine height with the Tempest? (difference between inner and outer jackplate is OKAY measure for me; e.g. up 1/2″).Gary Hollander

At least Im not the only crazy Cat out there having fun. First and foremost those are incredibly good numbers with your PII/Merc setup. Impessive! Thats as good as anything Ive seen. Those Mercs are strong. Your comments on weight load hit a nerve with me. At least to a certain point. My Eyra runs the same or with very little difference with my all my tackle as I do with very little tackle in my boat. Also, not noticed that much difference too if there 20 gallons or 30 plus gallons. I know there comes a point in time the load does make a difference with full livewells and 250 plus co-angler but like you I have noticed very little difference lightening up my load. However, initially I thought my second console cost me some speed but Ive posted my best speed ever several weeks back. In reality I know its cold weather related. At best a 1 to 1.5 mph lost for the second console. Just some insights per your comments. You know I have been told that my heavier MK Fortrex cost some boats around 1.5 mph loss at WOT. All that said when I do decide to get another boat Ill really consider the MG option for that reason as well as its looks to be a bit easier to maneuver too. Man the MK Fortex looks like a beast. Keep the pedal to the metal. I really enjoy reading your comments. PM me your mailing address regarding my Fury prop.TomLast edited by Flyswatter on December 29th, 2010, 2:10 pm, edited 1 time in total.
Please dont take this as a slight but I wonder why try any other prop than the Fury. It was designed for bass boats and it seems to be the perfect prop for a Cat. I had a 26 on my last boat and though it was sluggish getting on plane with full gas and livewells in hot weather, it was the right prop for the Cougar. I have a 25 and a 26 already for my 11 Cougar. I am hoping the 25 will be the prop when the weather warms up. 90 is real hot here but it does get quite humid so the performance suffers a bit.Fury, right out of the box, is the prop for a bass boat. 27 temp would probably be ok while cool, but could be too much when u load. If you close to revlim with 26 fury it may be worth the time. 27 temp will probably hit u up for 200 rpm an give you 2mph if your motor strong enough to pull it to range. Maybe more, not familiar with your hull or motor.

It is the obvious choice for Mercury, unless youve already got a “hot” prop before the Fury came out….say…..a 28 Hydromotive 4 blade. On a 06 Cougar FTD/250 XS…………I even got a used Fury to run on my lil ol 175 EFI. The Tempest is noticeably different trim wise. Holeshot a slight edge to the Fury. Top end are similar. Of course, this is on the small end of the engine spectrum, the 150-175 range. Results may vary.Last edited by jignpig on December 29th, 2010, 3:09 pm, edited 1 time in total.96 Eyra/12 Mercury 175 Pro XS with 2015 single axle trailer2017 Victory Gunner
Yes, I was assuming a Mercury. Anyway, I get how fun it is to tweak things to squeeze out another MPH or two.Bill Spence St. Albans, VT billspence@yahoo.com http://www.twinstatebassin.com Bass Cat Boats http://www.basscat.com Vexilar Marine Electronics http://www.vexilar.com
Gchagler, you mentioned getting close to the rpm limits but didnt actually post what each prop topped out at. Please list that with the two 26s you ran. Im running a 07 PII – 200hp Optimax (not a Pro XS) without the saddle tank and have been trying to find better top end performance. Im currently running the stock 25 pitch Trophy and really like the handling but I know I am losing some speed with the 4 blades. And I am really looking for a prop that will allow the front end of the boat to rise up a little more. I seem to run heavy in the water and never really get on the pad (always seeing spray from the rear sides of the boat). Maybe that is the way a PII runs but I keep hpoing to find an answer to get it a little higher on the water. I also seem to have a great deal of rooster tail and never trim more than 2 on the trim indicator. Thanks for any help you can send my way.

Gonna try to get it back out on Friday Ill measure it then.
Tom, I love to push the envelope and these outboards love that cold, dry air and its not all that bad if you have enough clothes on. But I do get called crazy from time to time, mostly by my wife. I know these are great numbers for any 19fter 200 combo, but I was a little dissapointed(?spelling) I was really hoping to break 75, but Im not done yet I might could have dropped my buddy at the bank and hit 75 with just me in the boat.As for load the only thing that seems to change my performance much is full livewells or my 300lb father in law in the passenger seat. Thanks for the compliments Tom Ill PM you later looks like weve lost our cold weather for a couple of weeks.
