My wife is flying west to Las Vegas, 11-24, for a week to spend the holliday with our daughter who is having our third Grandchild on 12-02-08. I cant go because of business so I thought I might take a run to LaGrange Georgia with my Stepson on 11-26 and let him spend some time with his fathers family, as a suprise to him, which he doesnt get nearly enough time to visit. I have no intention in intruding on their family holliday (although they are great people whom I love well). Was wondering, I am taking my BC Boat along,(cause I HAVE to) where might I find a good bass hole in that region this time of year? I will have plenty of free time and dont mind traveling out from the LaGrange Georgia area. If all goes well I would like to put my Stepson and his Father on some decent fish. Maybe just me. Any advice would be appreciated.
Of course you have West Point there, and while it is not world class, it is fall fishing time there. So the shad population would be on the move and some shallow fish would dominate. The traffic would be light and a Holiday on the water at Thanksgiving it something we all look forwards to every year. You are only about an hour from Eufaula also and it can be a World Class fishery. Your closer than an hour to the river and Columbus, GA and the north end of Eufaula can be awesome on the tip up there by the lock area. BCB
West Point in LaGrange, Georgia is a wonderful place to fish with alot of spotted bass to the South and pretty good largemouth to the north. I have fished West Point alot, and it is one of my favorite destinations. You should be able to catch them deep around Maple Creek with a Carolina rig worm with a long leader and Watermelon seed finnesse worm. Also, a jigging spoon deep works well. One year at West point on Thanksgiving at around 1300 I got into them surprizingly with a chrome and blue rattle-trap in Maple Creek and just slayed them. Eufaula is even better than West Point. Go and have a wonderful time. I recently moved to Texas, or I would meet you on West Point or Eufaula and show you around. Great fishing, just simply great fishing. Corky
Eufaula is a much better largemouth lake and is about 1.5 hours south of LaGrange if you launch at Lake Point. West point has little grass and alot of small spots. I fished a ABA-AFT tournament yesterday and it took only 9 lbs to win. Unfortunately it wasnt me. Reports below are from 11/21. WEST POINT LAKE IS DOWN 2.2 FEET, CLEAR & 64 DEGREESBass fishing is fair and both spots are largemouth are in a fall transition and now is the time to fish small. Use small lures like small crank baits like a small Bandit or the small Rat-L-Trap. Concentrate on blow downs and use a Texas rig early and then pull out the Zara Spooks in bone. There is a good top water bite on the main lake and there are some large spotted bass are being caught early. After the surface action slows down go to a lightweight Carolina rigged finesse worm in green pumpkin and red bug.Line side fishing is good and the best places are on the flats at Maple Creek, Indian Creek and by the trees at the dam using live bait. Try trolling also with crank baits in the middle of the creeks and on points on the river channel. Use the 200 Series Bandits in pearl or white and a chrome and blue ˝ ounce Rat-L-Trap. Also use the ˝ ounce Rooster Tail. Use the live baits like shad around humps, flats, roadbeds and areas of standing timber. Check for fish at the railroad trestle hump, the flats at the mouths of any creek. The stripers and hybrids have been feeding on shad on the surface down around the dam early in the morning. Popping corks are the best way to catch these surface feeding fish. The best time to fish has been from daylight until about noon. Crappie fishing is fair and the fish are holding in the blow downs and brush piles in the backs of the creeks. Try dropping minnows in around the structure with corks. Fish are also still holding around the bridge pilings. Drop minnows 8 or 12 feet down be a line watcher as the strikes will be light. LAKE GEORGE/EUFAULA IS DOWN ONE FOOT, 61 DEGREES & CLEAR BY CLAYTON BATTSBass are holding tight to cover due to the recent cold fronts. Fish a black and blue Spro finesse jig with a Big Bite Baits green pumpkin chunk close to blow downs and hydrilla mats. Fish a black and Blue Yomama with a 1 ounce Tru-Tungsten flipping weight in the mats of hydrilla. You may have to shake it in the mat for twenty to thirty seconds to get bit. Fish a white Picasso spinner bait around flats when the sun is out for fish searching for bait to feed up for the winter. These fish can also be caught on a Spro Aruku shad in chrome with a blue back. There are still some schools of fish on the ledges. These fish are falling for reaction baits, such as a #7 Fat Free shad in Foxy Shad. When you are fishing the ledges keep a look out for balls of shad out of the ledge and drop a Hopkins jigging spoon to these fish.
Thanks guys very much, my Stepsons Grandparents live on West Point but I never heard anything about it, info wise, as a fishery. I knew you fellas would know and I appreciate your help greatly. I goggled both lakes and found some very nice waterfront lodging info. If we can pull this off I will probably stay on West Point and fish both. Even if we cant get down this week it will most certainly be soon. My tourny partner, and great friend, was in my office today while I was searching info on these lakes. We saw, of course, several big bass photos and 64 degree water. Hell I saw a neighbor walking on his pond yesterday, and well be walking on all our water up here in a few weeks! Thanks again, I look forward to the trip.
Lake West Point is pretty easy to run. Lake Eufaula, on the other hand, requires that you be careful about staying in the boat lanes. If you put in at Lake Point, make sure to stay in the boat roads as marked by the red and green indicators. Lake Eufaula is a wonderful place to fish. I lived right on Lake Eufaula for a number of years and wish I still lived there. Corky
Cabins at Highland Marina are a great place to stay. FYI there was a 14 lb plus largemouth caught at the end of Yellowjacket Creek 3 weeks ago on a POP R.
Eufaula Water temp was 58 last weekend. Good fish are up in creeks (back half) in main lake area, did not go up river. Scumpernaug (sp) t-rigged trick worm. “Shad are shallow”some top water in the AM. Everyone throws a spinnerbait here year round. If you are comming to middle GA then get ahold of me!
