Ok this is the first tilt steering wheel that I have owned on a boat. It always seemed to have slop in it from day one. ” Slop is side to side and up and down movement of the wheel not much when turning the wheel ” I did find the big Philips head machine screws loose but I tightened them with lock tite about a year ago and had no more problems with them. I know it is safe because I have checked it all out several times. It is getting worse.Looks like there is to much clearance in the bronze bushing that is right behind the wheel. I have checked the steering wheels on other Bass Cats and they seem to be about the same or maybe a little less slop. I heard on here that there was an upgraded tilt? is it any better? Im about to the point of removing it which would be a major pain to move the pump in front of the console which means making a bigger hole and bleeding the steering. before I go through all of that , Has anyone found a fix for the slop? Can I upgrade the tilt? Like I said It is safe but it bugs me with the wheel moving around like it does. And others that have driven my boat alway ask if it is OK? because they notice it right away. any help from you guys would be appreciated.Last edited by txmrbass on December 28th, 2008, 2:08 am, edited 1 time in total.
We are not sure if you are speaking of shaft or pivot slop? We think this is an 07 from memory? There is not a different tilt we are aware of if so.
Swap it for a non tilt. Here is what I have found with tilt units. Its a poor design held together with metric screws the equivelent of #10s, they pinch a clam shell housing against a knuckle and shaft. Its scarry thinking of having tiny screws holding a helm together at 80mph. What I found out from speaking to Teleflex Techs is there is NO replacement parts for those helms only replacing as a assembly. What I did for my customer was modify the 2 pinch pieces for 1/4-20 screws and locknuts that was 2yrs ago and unit still working fine. After seeing this design Ill never own a tilt helm JMHO Scott
BCB It is an 06. It seems to be to much clearance in the bronze bushing that is pressed into the part that tilts were the steering shaft passes through it.
scottdise I know exactly what you are talking about since I have taken this apart looking for the slop. This Cat came with the tilt steering but I can assure you my next one wont. Seems like they/ Teleflex could have used a U-joint or something better.
Yes there are much better parts or designs they could have used.
Guys, while we agree with you all, we also have to add that there have been very few issues with the tilt steering. We have pressed for a better system and we had hoped that when TeleFlex purchased Morse Controls marine division they would spring out a new R & D knuckle that Morse had designed. It appears that design somehow got misplaced and no one can find it. honestly though, there are not bulk issues on this helm. BCB
BCB I belive you. and nothing agenst BCB for sure. I have access to a pretty hefty machine shop and I may just have to change out the bushing and do a few things with it to tighten it up. Or I may just take it off and move the pump to the front of the console. I have installed 3 Sea Star systems in other boats so it is nothing new for me. Thanks Gary
I have not had a problem with my tilt. The only time I really “need” it is when I am standing up at night or low light conditions so I can see the river better, which about twice a week during summer. Tilt the wheel down and hold on to the top of it. I like tilt.
Ok it is good to have Friends that are machinists. he milled a few thousands off both halves of the knuckle. ” they were not flat to begin with” which took the slop out of the swivel joint. he drilled out the bushing and replaced it with a bronze bushing with less clearance. which made it allot better also. I also put some grease on the swivel parts and in the bushing when I put it back together. and upgraded the bolts with shoulders so threads would not be on moving parts. Better then new now.
