Hey guys I have a 2000 Jaguar and seeing this year that the frame is starting to show some pretty bad rust bubbles under the paint and figure its time to strip it down for a makeover. The plan is to take boat off trailer and strip everything off from it front to back, fix a couple issues with frame and then have it sandblasted and primed. Then to the body shop to have it painted and start the reconstruction process. Thats where i was looking for a little input from the Basscat guys as to what to put on it. Im going to replace everything from winch, jack, bunks, lights and anything else that needs attention. Brake system has already been replaced a year ago as the axle had issues. Im thinking of putting a couple of the new LED reverse lights on as well.If there is something that you would recommend to put on such as one jack or the other (maybe one wont work on my older boat frame) im listening. Im planning to call Basscat in the next week or so to place an order for everything and then start the project 3rd week in august so that its done before the good fishing starts up again.Im thinking ill just paint it and put decals back on trailer and not worry about the striping on side of frame as itll already be a lot better than it is now.Does Basscat sell just the trailer paint to that i can have my buddy spray it on in his shop? Thanks for any input you may have.
You might wait until they come out with the new bunk material that their showing this week. If they do not sell the paint, give them the serial # and they can give you the color and you can pick it up locally. I recommend changing all spring bushings, and checking for any damage to the hangers, equalizer bars, shackles, and springs while you have it down. You can also see about Rhino lining or similar instead of paint.
I am going to have Line X redo the trailer on my 99 Jag. Cheaper and more durable than body shops and paint. Good luck
I guess i hadnt thought about doing a rhino liner/line x on the boat trailer but seems like it could be a good fit. Id be curious to know if anyone has done it and how they like it. Good point on bushings and shackles ill have to do that for sure as its a cheap replacement of wear parts and will be a lot easier having boat off trailer. Looks like ill have to wait and see what they come up with on the new bunk material figuring they wont have it available until after i expect to complete it. If it is a wrap over the top of carpet item then ill have to see about doing that in the future once they come out. Thanks for the input guys, want to get this fixed before the fall fishing kicks in planning to fish up until the lakes ice over here in Michigan.
We would Rebuild the brakes and totally replace the coupler welding a new one into the frame. The brakes, bunks, shackles, and springs are a no brainer and you will be up to par then.
Wow, great to see a few of the “older” Jag guys here. I have 99 Jag and my trailer is well over do as well. Refurbished the boat with carpet, seats and unfortunately a new motor had to be done….and I still ponder the trailer with its hanging banged up lights, bits of rusty paint, faded fenders…almost like myself…. Anyway GREAT to see a few of the older Jags on here and I may just have to step up and get the Jag cradle spruced up. … LOVE my ol Jag…BassCat is the best THanks
Also I would check the mounts for the boards, you might have to get a new set welded on if they are rusted away as bad as some I have seen.
I have my fingers crossed that I dont have to get that involved but will find out very soon. I dont want it to turn into a huge project however i want it done right to where i dont have to touch it again. I like the thought of getting a new coupler and welding it on, mine is not in top shape but between that and a possible brake line that system would be 100% new and i like the thought of that as its not been in real working order since i bought the boat.Guess i need to start ordering parts to get them all rounded up for the overhaul. Ill take some before and after pictures and see how everything turns out.basjax – I have been pondering getting the carpet replaced figure thats a good winter project to take it in and have done, what ballpark price was it for the total project? I dont want to hassle with that myself probably just take it in. Ive already replaced the gauges in the dash and converted to the A10 panel which i think turned out pretty nice. Seats were new just before i got the boat.
The refurb was completed about 4 years ago so remembering exacts just aint gunna happen. Wife says it was around $1,400.00. included stripping carpet deck and just boxes under seats, and having the new bucket seats installed. We chose the heavier carpet and it makes a HUGE difference standing on it. So if youre anywhere near Lake Havasu, AZ I know the place to go…Good Luck with it
I totally refurbished my trailer two years ago and I took it to a local shop who sandblasted it and then powder coated it. Was able to pick a color that was very close to original and like you I got the new decals and didnt bother with pin stripes. Thing is, you have to totally take everything off the frame which was OK by me because I used all new wiring and brake lines. Had to pay to have it hauled to shop on flat bed, but total cost with hauling was $750. So far, no problems, it looks great, and no chipping. I also got new decals for the fenders.
