Any body have any idea why one tire on my boat trailer is wearing on the inside?? I know low tire pressure will cause a tire to wear on the edges, but normally on both edges, not just one. Had tires and wheels off greasing bearings, and noticed the wear. By the way, it is a two wheel trailer.
The only way to check the wear is to reverse the right and left spindles which in theory would change the wear pattern. If the pattern remains the same you have an axle issue. If the pattern goes to the same side as the problem spindle prior, the that spindle (idler) is the issue. This would mean something bent the spindle. We suspect the axle in most of these cases and otherwise have found new idlers do not often resolve it.
Ok, Ill swap hub assembly from left to right. I have to check the idler mounting on the axle spline per the guys in the shop anyway and its raining / cold so Sat is a good day to do it. ka
just a thought here If you have access to a garage they might be able to perform a four wheel alignment If not then you an measure the alignment from rim to rim. Its tedious but it will show you if something is not right. If you have the spindle assembleys removed take some time and measure them against each other. If you have a trailer component supply store near by you might be able to swap out the defective part All the best.Dwayne Practice Angling CPRCatchPictureRelease2010 PIV 200SHO
Simpler just to flip the equalizers and then we react to the learned experience. If the axle has the issues we suppose they could have an alignment shop can not assist.
xact same issue with my trailer. I have a 2011 Pantera IV. Called up the manufacturer of the hub and brakes who also makes the axle. GCG does not they just install them on the trailer. I had to send pictures to them. I have a new axle sitting here waiting for me to install. I have to paint it but thats no biggy. Call up BCB for a rattle can of the correct paint for the axle if you have to replace it. Builder of fine Bass Fishing RodsReel Bearing and Drag upgrades.B2 Custom RodsBoca Bearings
Same issue on my 2011 duel axel. Ended up taking it to a truck laser alignment place in Sioux City Iowa. Watched him do the whole thing . Front axel was 5/16″ off on the tow in, back axel was less than that. He actually bends the axel without affecting the frame of the trailer. I just had it done, so now will replace tires and see if it fixed it.
Well, half day later, may have it fixed. Lock nut on the bolt that mounts equalizer to the axle was cross threaded and locked up when trying to remove to swap sides. Thai was also giving a false sense of being torqued to 150 ft lbs. being loose on the spline allowed the hub freedom to move slightly and the tire friction causing the tire to drag on the inside. Cut the bolt off, replaced, torqued to 150#, no movement and should wear straight now. Will still take and get alignment checked at truck trailer shop. Thanks for all of your input. ksaggie
Sorry for the issue. The bolts come in with nuts installed and all the crew has to do is torque them down after they are positioned. Glad you figured that one out.
ted.rhodes, Contact your dealership and get them some digital pictures of the tires showing their wear. You obviously had someone check Caster and Camber for the measurement. If so then they should be able to give you both measurements.
I have not had caster and camber checked. I measured toe in on tires. By my measurement the tires are toed in three eights of inch. Tires have a feather edge on the tread when you run hand across tread.. By being toed in to much tires are sliding while rolling. I was wanting to know if possible to correct toe measurement on trailer.
If the spindle is not bent, then it is the axle. If the spindle is bent, then its impact. The measurement of a ruler is alright, though hard to get right for most. There are no adjustments and thus the axle manufacturer would prefer professional numbers.
Thanks for the info.
