Ive been looking at getting a Margay and 150 proxs. Im not sure if my Chevrolet Equinox can tow it safely. It is rated for 3500# and only has the 1″ receiver.I currently tow a 16 10″ boat with a 100hp and it does ok. I do have trouble pulling it out if the ramp is in (very) bad condition. When I searched the forum I found someone saying the total package weight was 3000lbs. If that is true I might be nervous. What are your thoughts? Thanks,Tom
It is not bumper mounted. It is a curt brand hitch mounted in the factory designated holes. Also front wheel drive.
It will borderline ion specs though you should be fine with that.
Normally the towing part is easy…you may not get to speed as quick as the others but you will get there. The problem comes when you experience and quick stop…..your vehicle may not stop the additional weigh near as efficient as a larger tow vehicle. And you have already experienced the problems that you can have on the ramp with a small truck/SUV. With that said I dont think that you will have a problem with getting a Margay from point A to point B and back. Just allow for extra stopping room and pay attention to the ramps that you will be launching on. I do believe that the Margay trailer does have brakes so the stopping part will be greatly enhanced. I towed for years with a standard cab Toyota pick with a four cylinder and just allowed extra time and room to stop. I had four wheel drive so I never worried about the launch…Good LuckElwood…..Bass Cat Proud
Nice catch on the brakes. Margay models do not come with brakes though we do suggest brakes on the trailers, especially in your case. MargayTrailerEngineBatteriesGearFuelPropellerElectronicsTrolling motorThat puts you just under 3,000 gross.
My margay does have brakes. They make all the difference, a must have IMO.
Are breaks something the dealer can add? I dont understand how they work. Do you need the larger round plug? I just have the 4 pin flat. Is it just a matter of when the break lights turn on it electrically activates the brakes? Are the brakes themselves electric? …. sorry likely a dumb question. Thanks for the input.
They are surge brakes as your car slows, it compresses and actuator built into the trailer tongue casing the hydraulic brakes to active. I have a Margay 150xs and have towed with a 2013 Explorer front wheel drive, they are definitely worth having. I never encountered any issues at any ramps I went to, I just took it slow and easy. I used the emergency brake and feathered the throttle when pulling the boat out.I think the package weight on my margay is 3600-3800# but I also have the 4″ frame, Im not sure how much that adds to the total package weight.
I towed my 2010 Sabre with a 2009 Equinox no problem. It was front wheel drive but had the V6. If you have the 2010 or newer equinox I think they are 4 cyl engines but I might be wrong. Dont remember if there was a 6cyl available on the newer models. I had no problems with the V6 pulling or stopping but trailer did have brakes. I did run into problems on wet and steep ramps. Hope that helps.

MargayTrailerEngineBatteriesGearFuelPropellerElectronicsTrolling motorThat puts you just under 3,000 gross This is making me nervous now. My Margay should be coming in soon, I estimated originally before buying it, that it wold come in around 2400 pounds, I forgot a couple little things, but also factored in what I though was some excess. I bumped up my estimate of the trailer to 600 lbs yielding:Margay, 1250, ||Trailer, 600, ||Engine, 375, ||Batteries, 180, ||Gear, 50, ||Fuel, 169, ||Propeller, 20, ||Electronics, 10, ||Trolling motor, 40, || , , || , 2694, ||This is very very close to my rated capacity, am I grossly underestimating something? I tried to google weights for as much stuff as possible. My engine is 115 proXS. Now the exact same car as mine is rated to 4000 pounds in Europe, identical mechanically, so I think even if Im a tad over I probably could just keep it at 60 or under and be fine. Gear will probably go up (quickly) over time, but right now I bet I only own 20 pounds of fishing gear.
