THINKING ABOUT BUYING 1995 PAN.2 WITH 200 MERC.WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF MY 1997 CHEVY S-10,2 WHEEL DRIVE WITH 4.3 V6 CAN HANDLE THIS BOAT. WILL ONLY BE PULLING LESS THAN 20 MILE TRIPS.
I had a 99 S-10 that I used to haul a 18 foot basstracker with a 40 horse. It hauled it fine on flat land. The trailer did not have breaks. Give yourself plenty of room to stop and you should be ok on short trips! I dont recommend hauling long distances simply because you wont have the stopping power and wet surfaces can get really scary! Good luck and drive with extra caution!
I pull a 96 P2 with a 91 Chevy 1500 (rebuilt last summer) I dropped a 383 stroker in it! I have a 96 dodge ram (v6 Why they put a V6 in a full size ram I will never know, but it goes get good gas mileage) I pulled my buddies boat with it 17-18 Custom Laser with a 150 Johnson. Flat ground wasnt a problem. Started getting into hills/mtns, and pulling the boat out of the water I really had to ride the clutch. I will not try to pull my P2 with my Dodge. It just dont have the ponies and low end torque as my Chevy! Just be careful like last posted give yourself plenty of stopping room. May want to have a strap or chain in case you need some help getting the boat out of the water with your truck. Or else have the ability to call or ask someone if your pickup cant get the boat out of the water. Good luck. Steve
I had a 95 PII that I pulled with a Tacoma for a few years with no problems. Youll need to maintain presence of mind in the way of stopping distance though. Youll learn your capabilities in this respect pretty quickly. You shouldnt have any problems just keep a little extra distance in front of you and dont chance the yellow lights…lol.http://www.justsayhi.com/bb/files/count … r=0&un=BCB OWNERS INVITATIONAL&size=normal&mo=03&da=27&yr=2007″ width=”250″ height=”80″>http://www.justsayhi.com/bb/files/count … r=0&un=BCB OWNERS INVITATIONAL&size=normal&mo=03&da=27&yr=2007″ />http://assets.justsayhi.com/badges/521/ … 57ol3i.jpg” alt=”” style=”display: none;” height=”1″ width=”1″ />
IF I REMEMBER THAT 4.3 WAS A PRETTY STOUT MOTOR………
CaddoCat is on the nose. I pulled a 94 Eyra with an 87 S-10 2.8 with automatic through the mountains at Ouachita. Just dont be in a hurry, and allow plenty of room to stop.
First, dont get mixed up in the automatic vs manual issue. I pulled a 19 boat behind a chevy astro van with a 4.3 v6 for several years with absolutely no problems. You are not going to accelerate like a corvette. But it will pull just fine with an auto and the ramp wont be a problem for that motor. The problem comes in when you want to stop. When the boat weight begins to pass the two vehicle weight, things can get interesting. My brother-in-law used to pull a 17 ranger behind one of those tiny imported pickups (his was a datsun with a 4 cylinder motor, manual tranny.) He pulled that boat all over Mississippi, LA, FL, AL with no problems. But in driving it a couple of times, I did notice that if it rained, you better anticipate traffic as you could get on the brakes, and the boat would push you right along on a downhill surface. You could lock the wheels on the truck with little effect on your speed. So it is not about pulling, it is about stopping. I have pulled everything behind my current 4.0L ford ranger. Including a trailer loaded with 3500 pounds of mustang going to the drag strip, total weight is about 5K pounds. With trailer brakes, it tows flawlessly. In the Birmingham area which is hardly flat.2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
I pulled my 92 Sabre behind a 91 S-10 with a 2.8 manual transmission. I dont think that 4.3 will have any problems. The only concern is what everyone else is bringing up……the stopping power. Also like they have been saying, I dont think it is a major issue as long as you are careful.Jim EbarbMany, LA (Toledo Bend Lake)2004 Cougar/ 225 OptimaxHumminbird Helix 12 Chirp SI on BalzOut Mount at bowLowrance HDS 7 at bowHumminbird Helix 12 Mega SI on Ram Mount at ConsoleLowrance HDS 8 in dash at console
I believe it will pull it fine. Stopping will be an issue! But getting it back on dry land will be the main issue. I dont think you will ever get enough traction to get off the ramp back on dry land. If you REALLY trust yourself with the motor it will push you.BUT I dont recommend this because could cause serious problems if not timed just right. I tried using an s-10 to pull 17 ski boat and had this very problem.Might be something to think about!
SORRY FOLKS I FORGOT TO SAY THE TRUCK DOES HAVE ELECTRIC BRAKES. SO MAYBE THAT WILL HELP WITH THAT PROBLEM.AFTER SOME OF THE COMMENTS I GUESS MY CONCERN IS GETTING BACK UP THE RAMP. I BELEIVE THE 4.3 VORTEC WILL DO THE JOB FINE. WHAT CONCERNS ME IS THE TRACTION ISSUE. NEVER HAD BOAT WITH A TANDEM AXLE TRAILER. IS THE TOUNGE WEIGHT LIGHTER WITH THE TANDEM. THANKS
