hey has anyone towed a basscat sabre with a 4 door jeep wrangler. i want to get a 2022 sabre but im worried about long distant traveling and the actual true weight ( boat, trailer and full tank of gas). thanks guys!
I have not towed any boat with a jeep. I once towed a 15′ tri-hull with a 70 hp outboard with a ford ranger pickup. That was exciting each and every time to say the least. If I were looking at a tow vehicle and boat combination, I would first pull the info that the manufacturer of the boat puts out there for the boat, trailer and motor. Next add in weight for batteries, electronics, trolling motor and fuel. Also factor in how much weight will be in the boat if you are towing it with full livewells. Rule of thumb is 8lbs per gallon, so if you have say 50 gallons between fuel and water in the livewells, that is an additional 400 lbs. Next add in an approximate value for your fishing gear, rain gear, tools, anchor, ropes, and whatever else you will put into that boat while trailering it. Then look at what the manufacturer of your vehicle states regarding towing, type of hitch and so on. Also take in consideration the wheelbase of your vehicle, as well as if it is 4 wheel drive, 2 wheel drive, if it has positraction, traction control, anti lock brakes, etc. Remember you have to stop this rig besides being able to start it on both wet and dry conditions. I currently pull a Cougar with a GMC Sierra 1500 4 wheel drive truck with a 5.3. I would not even think of pulling this boat with anything smaller than what I currently have. Once you get pushed around at least once by the trailer you are towing because of a stop you will understand this.
Yeah I’ve towed an aluminum with it and it was fine I was hoping to go with a basscat but I’m unfortunately going to have to stick with aluminum
I pull my Caracal with a 2020 Toyota Tacoma 4WD V6-3.5 MT, and I believe the Jeep has similar specs. I know that’s not the same as you are looking for, but may be similar. I was a bit worried to when I got the boat last year. My boat loaded is around 4k pounds (give or take, including motor, trailer, batts, gas, fishing gear, electronics, etc.) towing capacity of the truck is 6k. I don’t have any real issues, but like was mentioned above, it doesn’t stop on a dime so you have to brake early and long. The only other issue I have is pulling it out of the water on a wet ramp, but 4WD resolves that pretty easily. MPG takes a dive, but that’s not unexpected. I had to drive to AL from FL to get it, and the long drive went fine.
I think as long as you have some buffer between towing capacity of your vehicle and weight of what you’re towing, and take things easy while driving, you should be okay. Obviously, more towing capacity the better.
Jeep specs say Wranglers is limited to 2000 to 3500 pounds
I have pulled a Lynx with a Wrangler Sahara Unlimited JL and it does okay with the bigger boat. On the hwy the Lynx can pull the Jeep a bit but other wise it will handle it. I don’t recommend the Jeep for a bigger boat as the primary tow vehicle but I believe the Sabre is 800-1000lbs lighter than the Lynx.
I believe it depends a lot on where you live and how the boat ramps are. I remember watching a jeep trying to pull a bass boat out of the water. It was in Ohio on a steep ramp that was wet, but that jeep could not do it. Had all 4 wheels spinning and could not pull that weight out of the water. Remember when in the water on a ramp, that water causes a lot of resistance. If it were flat like we have here in Florida never an issue.
If the tow vehicle rating is 3000-3500, then often there are suspension and other upgrades that will enhance towing limits.
I have a 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL Unlimited and have towed my 1997 Stratos 295 PE (19.5′) with 200HP single axel trailer with disk brakes since I bought the Jeep. That boat came in at about the same weight as a P2. I did add Air Lift 1000 bags to the rear coils and that noticeably helped level it out while towing. I just got a new P2 and I have a dual axle trailer each axle with brakes and it stops so much better.
Tow limits also use braking ability as part of the equations the engineers use. If you tow say 4000 and your car is rated at 3000, you could possible have a problem with your insurance in an accident.
Most vehicles dont have a ton of problem dragging something, they get into trouble because they will not stop
I have towed my Caracal with our Wrangler Rubicon and no problems with handling or braking. The Rubicon has 4:10 gears and pulled the boat/trailer on the road and out of the water at the ramp just like my full size Ford.
I wouldn’t worry about it weight wise, but what wheels/tires suspension do you have on the wrangler? I drove a 2-door Wrangler on the highway w/o a boat in tow that was a white knuckle experience as had 40s and sway bars disconnected. You have longer wheelbase, so it should be better if not set up to rock crawl. We used to tow our Classic with a V6 Explorer back in the day with no issues, I towed my previous 18’ aluminum boat that wasn’t much lighter than my Sabre with a V6 Tribute once and it was fine.
