I have a 2018 Bass Cat trailer with dual axle brakes. Recently I have noticed a noticeable “clunk” when accelerating after a stop; i.e. taking off after stopping at a traffic light. I have had the brakes bled and visually inspected everything to the extent of my knowledge. Could it be the “shock absorber” in the brake actuator? Any help would be appreciated.
Remember that the trailer moves forward when you stop and that movement applies your brakes. When you accelerate from a stop it is the trailer moving backwards and that is where you hear the clunk. This is working correctly. Try taking off slowly as you can and you might or might not hear the trailer slide back.
I agree, however, I have owned several bass cat trailer with the same brake arrangement and this sound is much more pronounced; i.e. it feels like the piston is moving 3-4 inches as opposed to the normal 1 inch. Or am I a worry wart?
Many times this is the actual receiver on the truck. I made a device that locks the receiver very ridged. Those are a sloppy fit. Obivously this is because of easy removal. If it wasnt a loose fit. After a while one would not be able to remove it due to rust
You are right redngoo. This also occurred to me and I have installed the bracket that secures the trailer hitch in the receiver. There is no slop there after the installation. Unfortunately it didn’t help the clunk noise. Appreciate the thought however.
Being a 18 model i wouldnt think the shock is bad. Have you been back to your dealer? By your description this could be air in the system. Brake fluid evaporates and with the small reservoir it dont take much and its on air. Have you checked the master cylinder level? Before i learned mine got on air. Bleeding the old fashion way it took a while to remove the air. Even using the bottle trick with the clear hoses to visible see wat was coming thru the lines i would think “its bled” only for my wife to say another just came out. Being that new if air is not the trouble. Id ask the dealer about a new actuator
