Trailer brakes not working

Ive trailered my boat 3 times since I bought it. Its a 1995 Pantera with dual axle trailer. Doesnt seem like the trailer brakes are working at all. I checked the fluid reservoir and it was low so I filled it to about 2/3 with DOT 3 fluid. Checked all the brake lines and have no evidence of leaks. I read a couple of posts that said you could check the brakes by disconnecting the 5F plug and trying to back up. I did that and the trailer rolls backwards with no resistance at all. I assume this means the brakes are not engaging. Short of finding a shop to work on it are there any more checks I can make to determine where the problem lies? Also, if anyone knows what type coupler this is let me know. Id like to search for a manual to learn more about this system.

The could have air in them, which it sounds like is the issue on a short thought process.

How would you bleed the breaks on the trailer? I know how to bleed brakes on a car but i cant figure how to do it on the trailer.

Pressurize the coupler or the reservoir and let the fluid flow through. The coupler is a pressure by in and out action. You can also use a vacuum tank like they use to remove oil from a vehicle. BCB

Check the wheel cylinders by removing the brake drums. They get gunked up over time and stop working.

One with this much age is often in need of all components, master cylinder, wheel cylinders and maybe lines. The cylinders can be rebuilt on the wheels, though usually the master is due replacement.

That type of coupling is manufactured by Attwood. you can go to their website and download a PDF manual. Not a complicated system. You will be better off replacing the wheel cylinders rather that trying to rebuild. They will get filled with mud and water and the bores will be scored. The shoes from a 1970-71 mustang will fit perfectly (2 1/4 x 10). Also, check your spring componants. You will find the spring bushings, bolts and shackles are worn out. I have gained a lot of knowlege on this issue from a total trailer rebuild on my 94.

Thanks for the info. The brakes are disc brakes, replaced in ~ 2000 by the original owner. RatherBfishing, thanks for the info on the coupler. Ill check online for a manual. After that Ill start by bleeding the brakes and go from there. If all the upfront stuff is good I should be able to take care of the brake job. BCB, is the master cylinder something I can get from you guys, or would I contact Attwood?
