Can anyone tell me how much distance is there between the tail gate on p/u backed straight or on a jack. The distance looks tight.

If your asking about lowering your tail gate and hitting the pole…. it will never happen. If you want to walk between the truck and the boat, you will have to raise the tailgate to get through. I still say it is one of the best features on my P4.

It could happen if you jack knifed it almost, though in a more straight line there is little chance. BCB

I was concerned with when I back in at a motel or such. Not always able to get straight, was thinking of being able to open the tailgate.

I dont think that will ever be an issue, unless as BCB said, you really have it jackknifed. Ive had the step and pole on all three Cats Ive owned, never had an issue with the tailgate hitting it. BCB has come up with many, many innovations for boats and trailers, but as Brewcat said, the step and pole has to be one of the best innovations ever put on a boat/trailer! It has saved my rear end so many times!
