Topic: Trailer Lug Nuts

This afternoon I went out to the 06 PIV in the garage and did a check on all the four, wheels, lug nuts. Every lug nut was about 1 flat loose. When was the last time you can honestly say you checked yours? I know some check em every trip, but I bet some have not checked them lately and it may be time to! PS.. My last club tourney, one of the guys had a blow out on his left trailer tire. He had no lug nut wrench in the truck or boat. Yes it is a good idea to check those lug nuts as well as the nuts on the steering system and the nuts/bolts on the engine where it is mounted on the transom. Thanks for the reminder!

Good point Phil! Actually, that same club tourney, I fished in the back of a friends boat. We were cruising about 60 mph in his 21 ft Stratos with a 225 Rude. All of sudden we were doing a “S” pattern in a way, too fast for my liking. I noticed him jerking the steering wheel back and forth. First thing I thought was… come on, lets go just go to this point we talked about 3 miles away. He stopped the boat fast and yelled WTH!! (or something else) I looked back and seen that his jam nut came loose on the steering in front of the motor. Luckily he had tools in his boat and I tightened it up with a big crescent wrench in less than a minute. Got to the fishing point, and then noticed a 6 pt buck swimming across the lake. He had to swim at least a mile to get across to that point. He musta smelled some fish there too?

Just got back from Lake Pleasant here in central AZ. While wiping the boat down after a good day fishing in the wind, I remembered reading here about checking tighness on lug nuts. I have a 07 Classic. Bought it new six months ago. While cleaning the trailer wheels I found two lug nuts so loose I could remove them with my fingers. Just another heads up for all you Cat owners. Thats why theres a little label on the fenders. The aluminum tends to loosen on some as it wears, and the paint allows the wheels to set a tad. Though we really think most have been messed with or not originally tightened. We remove the wheels on some for delivery, and they are remounted at the dealerships. On a new trailer here, there are three (3) check points with torque wrenches. If we delivered it with factory mounted wheels, we have not seen one come loose since that process was enacted. BCB
