You will need the following tools: drill w/ a 1/2 inch metal bit, 1/2 inch wrench & socket, 3/4 inch wrench & socket. Before I started the project I inserted a piece of wood into the trailer tongue to keep the wires down and out of the way – you dont want to nick a wire or brake line when drilling. The wench is easy to remove. It is held in on by three bolts. After I removed it I cleaned the area in prep for the install. The step simply slides over the pole. Make sure you back out the set screw when you are sliding it down the pole to avoid scratches. You can see the set screw in this pic. I used painters tape to mark the where I needed to drill. Then I carefully drilled working my way up to the 1/2 inch bit. The bit was long enough to drill the other side from the inside out. Drilling took a long time. Thankfully I had two drill batteries and was able to rotate them while the other was charging. The long screws with nut and two washers each come with the pole. I mounted the pole inserting the screws from the step side. I already had the fiberglass step on my trailer. You can purchase the pole and fiberglass step combo, but I only purchased the pole. 3/4 inch wrench and/or socket is needed to tighten the bolts.New mounting screws for the winch did not come with pole. Fortunately I had some longer stainless bolts and new nuts or I would have had to make a trip to Lowes. The original screw is on top. I may have been able to use the original but it would have been really close. BCB, recommend including new mounting hardware for the winch too on future orders for I was surprised they werent included. It took some patience to get the winch and small step mounted, but I eventually got it all lined up correctly and tightened down. Once everything is tight I tightened the set screw (use the 1/2 inch wrench or socket). I think it turned out great. I look forward to not having to lay down on the front deck to attach the strap. You can purchase the pole here – http://www.basscatstore.com/trailerstepwithpole.aspxPS – yes, I know I am missing the cap to the brake fluid reservoir. I am not sure when it went missing for I just noticed it when I was doing the install. Last edited by rlb8s on February 8th, 2015, 12:40 am, edited 1 time in total.
Best thing I installed on my boat and you are right, drilling took forever!
Looks great. I seem to appreciate mine more as time goes by. Makes life easier when you are by yourself and on crutches!!
These shots are worth a couple Kudos.
Keep an eye on the set screw as I have had mine work loose a couple of times. Nice Job!GeorgeGeorge
Put some loctite 242 blue on it. Should keep it in place.
Sweet, a couple of kudos. thanks.
You will love the pole and step. I fish alone 80% of the time and getting on/off boat when loading is a snap with the pole even for us old guys.
Ok, I know its only for swing away tongue trailers but WHY? I sure wish I could do this to my straight tongue trailer. Has anyone ever made one work out for us who dont have the swing away. Just wondering you guys are so lucky to have this available for you. I would even have some one weld up something to make it work. Thanks you can laugh at me now!
One addition to the above thread: it would probably be prudent to use some primer and paint to seal the unprotected steel where the holes were drilled in order to prevent rust.
