My (new to me) 06 Classic has some funny wear to the trailer tires (dual axel). They are worn on the inside on the port side and on the outside of the starboard side. Has anybody else had this problem? I guess the trailer is out of alignment, but I have never had this problem on a boat before. Any ideas how to fix this? Also, how do the trailer bearing covers come off, do not what to break them? Thanks,Troy West
We dont suggest that youmremove the covers as greasing is not suggested through the bearing buddy unit. The axles we think are somehow off, are you the original owner?
No, I just bought the boat last week. I do not think the previous owner ever rotated the tires. I heard somewhere that you need to rotate the tires on a dual axle trailer for them to wear correctly. This is my first dual axle trailer so I am learning as I go.Troy West
Since you are not the original owner, then we suspect the axle is bent. The new torsion axles have some wear, though the older spring axles ran tens of thousands of miles with absolutely no wear almost. This is a sprung axle and we think something is up. BCB Admin.
SHOULD THE TIRES BE ROTATED AS IN A VEHICLE?
We really have not seen tire wear to be an issue that required rotation unless there were a problem on spring axles. The tires do not float on a suspension as they do in a coil axle or a swing arm front turning wheel. The spring axles hold them straight and true. If there is wear there is another problem, that is possibly multiples. The largest factors we have seen are drive up window wheel impacts. These bend the spindles and really cause tire wear. Any I Beam alignment shop can straighten an axle with the proper caster and camber. Axles are straight along the horizontal plane, though they are not on the vertical plane. It equates to an approximate 1 1/4″ out at the top for proper alignment, though you can not check it on the frame without equipment easily. You cant just measure the wheel and tire with accuracy, though you can estimate with rough measurements. The newer torsion axles are more of a problem in that respect. Which is another reason we never really liked the torsion axle set up. The axles can move not on all rotation to any angle and the rubber inserts regulate that movement in their durometer which can vary. There are variables in the torsion axles that require tires to be rotated. Obviously we prefer spring axles, though quality springs were a challenge for trailers with the cost being a challenge. Too much manufacturing is being shipped overseas and we have to start bringing some of it home. BCB
Got the same thing, except on one tire (driver side), outside wear. Inside of the tire has at least 50% tread, outside is slick. The other side looked nominal. This is on an 06 PIV trailer. The only significant mileage was two trips to Mountain Home. I personally have put less than 5000 miles on the trainer. They told me it could be a bad tire.JWT
I live just south of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Who do you go to, to see if there is a problem with the axle? There is not a Bass Cat dealer around here and I bought the boat at Bowden Marine in Humble, Texas. Hope I do not have to go back to Houston.

They would have the equipment to check your axles and see if they are true or not. Also they can straighten them if need be. I had abnormal tire wear on another boat trailer I had several years ago (not a Cat.) I took it to a local shop. They found that the axle was bent in three places. They fixed me up and I never had any more tire wear other than normal wear. .
Yes, I Beam axles on large truck also get bent and that is why they have the equipment in large truck shops to straighten them.
