Maxxis UE-168 is the best 15″ tire Ive been able to find. Higher load range, comes in a 215/70, and has a higher speed rating than youll care to run. Its a commercial LT highway tread tire that is used for RVs and trailers in every country other than the US. I paid a little more for mine, but they tow well and dont heat up. After around 90 miles at 75mph – theyre no warmer than my truck tires. I like these a lot. Well worth the extra cost.
Kelly, Id just get whatever tires BCB is currently putting on new trailers. I figure they know what is the best. Thats what Ill do if I have my Cougar long enough to need new tires.
Cooper Cobra Radial GT, Mastercraft Avenger GT, Firestone Firehawk Indy 500.All 50,000 mile tires. I have Firehawks. Ill go back with Cooper or Mastercraft for price. Both identical tire I believe. Doesnt BCB still use Mastercraft?
^ Firehawk indy 500 is whats on mine as well. Seem to be holding up fine.13 PIV w/ 200 MercIG: WarriorRiverCustomRods
For trailer use – dont go by mileage, go by age. Four years is the limit, after that youre on borrowed time. Mileage life is 5k -15K miles. Most ST tires (even Marathons) are now made in China and the RV folks, who are more tied to their tires than we are, refer to them as “china bombs”. Go to one of their forums and see the tire debates….. I have no issue with BCB suggesting car tires on tandem axle trailers. I just did the math and didnt have enough weight capacity margin using car tires on my single axle Sabre trailer. It was a personal decision. The Mastercraft Avengers (less 10% for trailer use) have a load rating of 2976 lbs. for a pair. The minimum weight margin for safety is 20%. The Maxxis UE-168s have a load rating of 4087lbs. for a pair after the same 10% deduction. They are labeled as an LT tire – but are marketed world wide as a trailer tire. The RV folks swear by them. The Maxxis is speed rated for 99mph. If you go for a ST tire – theyre speed rated for 65mph max.. Who drives under 65? Dont know about everyone else – but I dont care to be changing tires on the way to a tourney before daylight.
It is our understanding Maxxis is also a Chinese product and we also think they are a good product.
I guess you could and it would equalize wear if the axles have alignment issues. However if the axles are properly aligned I dont see the need. In autos, rotation is recommended as the different positions have different stresses resulting in different tire wear and therefore the requirement of rotation. This is not true for a trailer with tandem wheels in the correct condition. I am not and expert and I am sure to be corrected if wrong but this seems to be the logical answer to your question.irv
Your boats weight sits mainly on the rear tires. When you turn the trailer sharp the front tires drag sideways. I would say rotate them, but Im not BCB.- Chaz
I rotate mine periodically. I also have them balanced. Dont see any reason not to do that.
So how about single axle trailers????Purchased new 5/4/15Bass Cat Sabre Vision EliteMercury Pro XS 150MotorGuide 75lb Tour EditionHumminbird – Stock (will be changing soon I hope)
We have seen limited needs to rotate tires other than one axle wearing. Its about keeping tire wear even and if they are wearing even we see little need to rotate them.
70 series tires are SHORTER in height than 75s , and the 205 / 215 / 225 numbers are tread cross section width . — The 225 / 75 could have fender interference on the inside of the tire due to extra width and height . — ( Been there / done that .) — If those are your only options , Id personally go with what theyre recommending . — Hoss
Thanks. I figured as much since the 205/75 specs were the most similar to the original equip specs for the 215/70 so the least chance of messing something up. Plus the height diff was less than an inch.
Use the Maxxis UE-168 bravo. Its a commercial highway rib D rated 8 ply tire. 215/70-15 is available and I have over 24,000 on mine with no issues. Same capacity rating as the 8008 with a 98mph speed rating. No you wont run those speeds but an ST tire is only rated for 65. Mine have given super service and tow great.
I have the Goodyear Marathons in the 225 75 15 and they seem to work well.
