I need a new truck, I have a Chevy Silverado 1500 4×4. My wife and I just had twins so now we have 3 girls. I need a crew cab truck. For one I need it for my job, and second to fit 3 car seats in the back. I am concerned with price, towing capabilities, gas mileage… I was wondering if anybody trails there Basscat with a Honda Ridgeline? Let me know what you guys are towing your boats with. Any suggestions will be appreciated. I know how my boat tows with my Silverado 1500 obviously. Thanks in advance, Sal
A friend of ours bought a new 06 Ridgeline to tow his new Puma, though his wife procured it. He enjoyed it, though felt it was a touch bit light on power and brakes. Fuel mileage empty was better than his Tahoe. BCB
You can probably do it, I towed an 89 Sabre with a 87 Toyota SR5 4×4, 4 cylinder/standard and did just fine. The thing you need to consider is not only towing capacity but also stopping power. If you are towing a Sabre, should not be a problem, just plan on leaving extra distance between vehicles and using extra caution on wet surfaces. I would not tow anything bigger with that vehicle. And consider how often you tow a boat compared to formula/diapers……. Come to think of it, my dad owns a Ridgeline. Maybe I can borrow it this weekend and tow my Eyra around for a while save some gas in my Titan.(YES, it is THAT big )!Last edited by jignpig on February 7th, 2008, 6:49 pm, edited 1 time in total.96 Eyra/12 Mercury 175 Pro XS with 2015 single axle trailer2017 Victory Gunner
I dont tow a glass boat, but, this summer I towed a dual axle U Haul trailer full of furniture from Montreal to Allentown. It might not have weighed as much as a sabre, but was far less aerodynamic. I had no problems and was very impressed. I think the Ridgeline/Sabre combo would offer no problems as long as you have trailer brakes.
I tow my 06 Sabre with a 99 Toyota Tacoma. It has a 5000lb tow capacity which is what the Ridgeline says it is. I have no issues but I will eventually move to a bigger vehicle. Mine is a straight stick which I have learned to hate over the last 8 yrs. As was stated above, just pay attention to stopping distances and you should be fine. Mine is also 4 WD, which is a must with a vehicle that size at the ramp. I must say if I was buying right now I would not consider a vehicle that size though. Your needs may dictate otherwise. Good Luck! Joe
BASKETMAN HAS AN 05 YUKON 4X4 FOR SALE,, 50 THOUSAND MILES,, CREAM PUFF…. PRICED RIGHT…………LOADED ROBIN
I have an 06 Sabre I tow with a Toyota Tacome 4 x 4 with V6. The truck has just over 100,000 miles on it with an automatic transmission. It does OK and stops fine with the trailer brakes. BassCat is the only boat company that I know of that puts brakes on their 18-foot boat as standard. Its a good thing, since I would have trouble stopping it without the brakes. I take it real easy pulling my boat. It lugs down pretty good pulling up a long slow hill. I only get 15 mpg pulling the boat which is probably what bigger trucks get (or better).
Ill tell you what, after I had my trailer mishap, I was sure glad I had my Tundra verse my old Tacoma. You may never need it, but wieght on the towing vehicle can save your life. That said, those Hondas look pretty solid. Also, the towing capacity shows flat surfaces, not inclines. If your towing up-hill a lot to your favorite lake, it sure could get old not having those extra 2 cylinders.
If you are looking at a crew cab, you might want to look at the new toyota tundra DC (Double Cab). Plenty of room for three car seats in back and a LATCH system for three. Lots of airbags and stability control also. My wife really likes the seating position and the telescopic sterring wheel. The 5.7 L v-8 is very quick, yet good on fuel with the 6speed auto. I average over 16mpg and on a trip not towing get almost 19 with a 4wd double cab. When I tow my 20 foot Basscat mileage is about 14 which is 40% better than my last truck. They are offering 2K rebates right now. It can also double as a great work truck with a bed liner or spary-on liner. Assembled in Texas. I have been chevyfan all of my life, but with the toyota, I dont have to see the service guys!
Hopefully you have gained some info here. Since you mentioned the Ridgeline in the first post, you may be looking to down size. But if you eventually decide to up size the Sabre, then you are back to square one. The good thing is that you have a BassCat. You have some brakes on that trailer, which can allow you to go to a mid size truck/suv. We could debate the Chevy/Ford/Toyota/Dodge and yes the Nissan TITAN Crew Cab, all day long. Fact is, as you know, the full size trucks do the best job of towing. What you still have to determine is, how much towing do you do? If you tow while working, you may need to stay full size, but maybe 2wd crew cab might fit your needs. I have towed with Toyota 4 cyl, Chevy v8, Dodge 6cyl, and Dodge v8, and the Titan v8. The smaller engines, you do notice the towing more. Remember, what you want, and what you need, are totally up to momma and the kids……96 Eyra/12 Mercury 175 Pro XS with 2015 single axle trailer2017 Victory Gunner
