trim amount 2008 Puma/ 250 Pro XS

Still learning a lot about driving this boat. Just curious what amount of trim is typical for WOT/ max speed. Jackplate is flush, 26 Trophy. Thanks.

The way that I do it is that I trim all the way out at WOT and then bump it down 2-3 clicks.

Phil, the Smartcraft manual says that maximum trim is 10. At idle, it tilts to 25. When Im running my Puma, however, my trim goes only up to 5.4. When you say you trim all the way out at WOT, are you trimming to 10, or to something less? Was a trim-limiter perhaps put on my boat at the factory?

Jim The maximum tilt/trim is 10 as long as your at idle or stop. When your engine revs to about 2500 rpms there is a limit on trim. At Wide Open Throttle (WOT) you can try and trim all you want, but its going to stop at a certain point since you are above the max rpm (~2500 rpms). I would also discourage you from trying to set up your boat by the smartcraft tilt/trim. It can get out of calibration and what you number says may be different from the next persons. I also assume you have a manual jack plate and if so, it is highly unlikely that BCB put a tilt/trim limiter on it. Only boats equipped with Bobs hydraulic plates may have the limiter. Therefore, trim all the way out as its only going to go as high as it can and then trim down 2-3 clicks.

Phil, My 250 Pro XS has the trim limiter installed on it and I have a manual jackplate. I learned this the hardway as the Allen bolt holding it in place vibrated loose during break-in and I couldnt trim the motor up to trailer it (running full-down during break-in). I helped Kerth Puma calibrate his trim gauge last spring; he needs to have it checked, perhaps… Gary Hollander

Actually all of the newer models have a trim limiter again on all Mercury applications, and a few others. If yours starts bumping as it nears upper trim ranges, it has a limiter.

Thanks, everyone, for the replies. Although my trim is limited to 5.4, I still feel that Im getting on plane. I just wanted to make sure there was nothing wrong.

You can adjust the amount of tilt, past the trim range. The bypass valves stop the trim angle inside the pump.
