Trim motor problems

I replaced the trim motor on my 2005 Mercury 225 EFI in January. The old one got slower and slower, and at the end I had to tap on the casing with a hammer to get it to work at all. I installed a rebuilt motor with a 1 year warranty. No problems until yesterday when the motor would not trim up, only down. I tapped on the casing and it started working fine. Cycled it about 20 times and it seemed fine. Fine that is, until I took the boat out fishing. Now it is back to trimming down but not up. The motor is under warranty, so no problems there. My question is, could there be a problem with the hydraulics that would cause early failure on the trim motor? Could just be that the rebuilt motor was suspect, but the way this one failed seemed identical to the first one. Any opinions would be appreciated.

Have you flipped the relays to reverse them. Up to down and down to the up position?

If the motor run fine down but not up it has to be the up relay, not the motor.

No, I have not tried the relays. Last time I tried it now will not go up or down. When the motor was trimming up it was very slow, like it was in a bind. Im thinking if the relays were the problem it would be a go/no go situation. Ill dig deeper tomorrow. I assume I will be able to run power directly to the motor, around the relays. That should give me a definite answer.

Loosen the jack plate to engine bolts to free should there be a bind on the J brackets to jack plate mount.

Looks like the trim motor again. Checked voltage coming out of both relays and have a solid 13+ volts. Ran voltage straight to motor leads one at a time and it wont budge. One question. I need to trim up some more to be able to get to the motor. If I just push the motor back and up with a bottle jack or scissors jack, will this do any harm to the hydraulics? Wasnt sure if it needed to be bled down or anything.

There is a release screw on the side which allows the fluid to bypass without doing valve damage.

^^ yep just release it & get a buddy to help you pick up the motor. Should be a knob on the side you can flip up & hold it in place or use your normal motor holder.13 PIV w/ 200 MercIG: WarriorRiverCustomRods

Got the motor up with a scissor jack after releasing the pressure. When I removed the motor some hydraulic fluid came out. I closed the manual bleed valve. Not sure if this was a result of having the bleed open or if there is something leaking. Dont recall seeing a lot of fluid when I replaced the original trim motor in January. Ran the motor by itself and it worked both ways. Now Im getting confused. Was able to turn the small coupling between the motor and hydraulics by hand. Did have more resistance going counterclockwise. The release valve was closed so I assume that was normal. Put everything back together and was able to trim up and down 30 times without a problem. Then I noticed a small amount of water coming out of the motor, on the sealed side. I already heard the “you get what you pay for” speech since this is a rebuilt motor. Anyway, its still under warranty, and as long as the hydraulic fluid issue is normal I should be good to go.
