During heavy rains I found my trim running down continuoously and the up wouldnt work. I got it stopped and replaced the relays. After a period of time it still happens but rarely and I can fix it by tapping a relay. Someone suggested I pull a wire off the bow switch and I havent run the boat since to see what happens. Is this typically a switch problem where a replacement would fixtit or a wiring problem?
I have had this happen on my 1998 Mercury 200hp twice but mine went up while running the lake.. Mercury had an issue with the Trim Switch on the Motor with condensation build up inside making a connection
You dont mention what engine this is and we are suspect Mercury and a cowling switch.
Without more info on the rig its a little tough to answer but it could be any of the trim/tilt switches Bow, T/S Handle, Cowl and if you have pro trim add it. Chances are if it only has done it in heavy rain Id start with the bow switch. The relays can stick but the rain should have any effect on them.
IF the front boots are worn out then yes, Sherms opinion could be accurate.
Its a 94 intruder 150hp. The whole sequence; I was on Rainy Lake at a boat in camp with an open dock, after 3 days of rain I heard my trim running and went to the dock and it was trimming down continuously and the up would only cause it stop running, no other action. Released the up switch and it resumed down. All switches did the same thing. Tapping the relays had no effect. I replaced the relays and it worked normal for about 30 seconds then did the same thing. Tapping the relays had no effect. Popped out the relays and swapped in the originals and it worked for about a minute. Waited a couple hours and found each swap it took longer to fail. Got to working 10 minutes, and we found we could pop in and pop out a relay and it would work right away. It continued to improve where the last two days it only did it once. The last few times we found all that was needed was to tap a relay and it resumed normal function. I popped out the bow switches and everything appears very dry. Pretty good in a 20 year old boat. After messing around I have managed to tear the rubber boot but I do not know if that was there before I started trying to fix things. Anyway I do need to replace those, if it was not a switch and was likely in the wiring I was considering not replacing the bow switches since I dont use them a lot, but I do use them and would prefer to have them functional.
Its hard to say what the issue is and a ohmmeter might help.
Last February my partners old 93 Johnson had the same thing of the trim either running all the time and killing the battery, or it would not work at all, we brought it to a dealer up by Toledo bend and he disconnected and cleaned the connections at the control box with relays under the cowl and re-installed the relays and everything has worked good since.
At the time we checked continuity of the bow switches and that appeared normal. I didnt check the others because I couldnt figure out how to get to them. I keep thinking it was moisture, especially since it improved after the constant rain quit. When the relays began to respond to taps instead of popping them in and out I suspected the part that the relays connect to. I ordered front switches since I now have torn boots on the bow switches. I will clean the connectors and see if it ever happens again.
You could order just the boots? Or both parts?
