Trolling Motor Need Info

Need some info on what length shaft and the Lb. thrust that best fits the 08 Cougar FTD and 08 Puma for more open big water fishing on lakes such as Amistad ,Falcon, Rayburn. Dont really like the banks always seem to crowded .

Either the 82lb, which is 24 V, or the 105lb, which is 36V will do the job. Both MG trollers are available in 45″,50″, or 60″, with the standard 45″ application used on most, with some big water guys opting for the 50″. I think both are available with transducers built in as well. Good luck, D.

Will the 82Lb 45″ shaft be enough thrust and shaft length on the Cougar FTD with the rear fuel tank. I thought but dont know for sure that the 82Lb 45″ shaft would be fine on the Puma since it sits flatter. What r the advantages of the 36 volt trolling motors other than thrust?

I run the 24V, 82lb digital ,and have no problem standing on the t/m all day. Keep good batteries in the boat and it should do a good job. And i am running the 45″ on my 08 Cougar AE, D,

While a 24 volt troller will do the job in most applications, nothing beats the extra power when in pads, heavy grass, or stuck on a stump. Theres not enough cost differential between the two to make a difference too. Go with the 36. I use a standard 45″ shaft on my Puma FTD and fish a lot in open water. Yes it will blow out in big water, but at that point its usually too rough to fish there anyway. Longer shafts too will interfere with the rod locker opening in the stowed position. This is absolutely not a reason to get a longer shaft. I just dont think its necessary.

With 36 volts you pull less amps so your batteries are going to last longer at the same thrust. Watts = Amps x Volts. Same reason a 24 volt is better than 12. Plus with 107 # thrust you can always zoom between spots.

For open water we would run a 50″ shaft, though a 45″ would do about 95% of your uses just fine or more. The other less than 5% would be in the wind. From coast to coast the only area we think on that hull you need a 50″ shaft is the NorthEast. Ontario, St Clair and other areas up there are often open water fishing and drift fishing. That requires more shaft. Maybe some times on Sam Rayburn? Though not often. Unless you are experiencing the type of water that the Elite shows have presented on BassMasters, then go 45″. If you are out in that stuff, then a 50 or even a 60″ may not be enough. BCB

Appreciate all the info from all the expertise on this site it is one of the most inetresting sites for information I have ever seen. On shaft length are you giving up much if you go from the MG 45″ or the MK 42″. Sometimes 3″ could be alot or on the MK should you get the longer shaft. .

Newer Minn Kota trollers in FourTrex have 45″ shafts.
