I have 2010 Jag, took it out today for the first time with a new 112, 36V Ultrex. Several times today it lost all power. I would turn the switch off and on with no response, and then unplug it. Plug it back in and turn it on, sometimes it would come back on, sometimes not. No rhyme or reason for what it would or wouldn’t do. Seemed to happen more as the day went on. Happened first time earlier in the day. Connections seem tight, will check again tomorrow, batteries are new within past year. Not a ton of use on the new batteries. All had over 12.4 volts at the end of the day. Never had a problem before with the Fortrex. I thought I had read somewhere about someone having a similar problem, couldn’t find it here with search feature, maybe I was searching the wrong terminology.
Thanks,
Britt
We will assume that your batteries are good, especially at the beginning of the day and are fully charged starting out, and the problem starts early. The Ultrex is much more voltage sensitive than the Fortrex, so the first thing I would be looking for is at least 36 volts at the plug (actually a little more). Check, and perhaps clean all of the connections from the battery to the front receptacle, including the breakers. Also, check the connections inside the plug itself. Tight connections don’t necessarily mean good, clean connections with adequate contact. You could also take voltage measurements all of the way up the chain as you do that, starting at the battery. If all of that gets done and then, checks out fine, and the problem persists, then it may be an Ultrex issue.
Did you change out your breaker to a 60 amp?
My issue was the 60 amp breaker. It was going bad, did not affect the Fortrex, but Ultrex acted same as yours is. I bypassed and ran direct to battery to figure it out.
So, do the existing breakers Bass Cat installed inline for the original trolling motor reset themselves? Like after time? Or do you have to manual reset them? My problem was fixing itself or resolving after time. Only think I did was turn the power switch off and unplug the Ultrex. Not sure any of that was actually doing anything.
I went back and re-read the long post on the old forums, found that I probably do need the 60 amp breakers, but again, do they reset themselves or is it something I have to do? I never reset any of the circuit breakers on the batteries yesterday. The motor eventually came back up without even doing that.
I would say last question, but probably not, the inline 60 amp fuse I looked at on Amazon was by Minn Kota, it looked nothing like the 50amp Attwood fuse in my boat. Does the 60 amp fuse look that much differently?

Try this, spin the propeller when it quits and see if it’s the armature. It sounds like it could be a dead spot.
BCB, it’s not that it doesn’t work, there isn’t even power to the pedal, the light is not even on.
I had a similar problem when I upgraded the old 12/24 volt motor guide with a Fortrex during January. It was the end of March before the problem showed up. I had set up the plug to be 24 volts. It was using two breakers and two sets of wires to the plug. I figured out that I had one or both breakers tripping.
I changed out to one set of wires with a 60 amp breaker and have not had a problem since. Before I got the breaker I figured out that there are manual and self resetting breakers. I opted for a manual because I like things to either work or not to work. Nothing more frustrating than to try to fix a problem and have it self correct before figuring out why it was happening.
Also once breakers start tripping they will trip easier the next time. Not sure why they do they just do.
So one of the spades/blades on my plug was loose. We got it tightened up and this seems to have fixed the problem. I ran all day and it didn’t shut off once. I did buy the new 60 amp breaker but hadn’t installed it yet. I wanted to see if tightening the blade fixed my problem, which it seems to have. Oh my, for the last remaining few people besides myself who didn’t have an Ultrex, do yourself a favor and look into one. Well worth it to me!
