one question… what speed? If you are idling along, and the boat speed has matched the engine RPM / prop speed so that the prop is not under much of a load, you can sometimes get various kinds of noise. The non-DFI motors do not idle quite as smoothly, so that the engine is sometimes pulling the prop, sometimes “coasting” which unloads the gear train. A good ear can sometimes hear this metallic popping as the clutch dog “chatters”. Disengaging can create a noise as part of this process. Whether this is your noise or not is unknown. Id check the prop nut first for proper torque, then try to figure out how to create the noise consistently. At idle only?
