The gel coat is a layer sprayed in the mold, and the fiberglass is then applied behind it. If they do a poor job in lamination, there are air voids under the corners and radius areas. This tapping with the plastic rod finds those little areas before you find them with a stump. We really have knocked most of the air voids out with this process for a QC method.
