I asked a little while ago about warrantees and just about everybody said I should go for a Merc warranty rather than an after market. I have another question for you guys. I called and foundout a 3 year warranty will cost over 3K with tax for my 200 Opti! I have never owned a new motor before but I would imagine the odds are in my favor that I wont have any major work (over 3K) needed in 6 years if I take care of it–is that fair to say? Also, Im estimating Im going to put on around 50 hrs a year, or there abouts. What do you think? Is it worth the gamble that years 4, 5, and 6 the engine will be free from any major work? It just seems to me that paying 3K now is not worth the small chance that it might save me a couple of thousand 3 years plus from now. I know its my choice, but I value your opinions. Thanks.

At that price on a 200 Opti we would Gamble on not needing the warranty. You have what is a proven engine and few 200s have trouble, plus that gearcase is a dependable item as well. Starters and compressors are the not that expensive and plugs are not covered. Just an opinion.

Call your dealer or a dealer, they can typically get you a better price on the extended warranty. I agree w/ BCB though if in fact it is 3K then I would probably gamble, history has also proven that to be a pretty reliable motor. Good luck. Judd Lasiter

Call multiple dealers and get pricing. This is alot like buying cars and boats. Everything is negotiable. As far as an extended warranty……………..your call. The problem is if it does break, its not going to be cheap. Lower units………..3K…………….powerheads greater than 5 or 6K. Something could break after the 3rd year and something may break after the 6th year. Regardless its going to cost the same. The difference is your 3K shorter if it breaks after the 6th year and youve purchased the extra warranty. Most major failures happen within the first 25 hours as long as you take care of it. Again, only you can make the call.

If and when you decide to sell the boat and have warranty on the motor it helps. Most people spending a large amount of money on a used boat want the piece of mind that they have warranty. If I am not mistaken you can add the extended warranty at any time before the original factory warranty expires. If it is a new boat you could wait a few years and make the decision down the road. That price sounds high shop around. Just my take.

Thanks, that was pretty much what I was thinking. I asked the guy that quoted me that price if that was the best he could do, and he said yes. Ill have to call around. But you think about it — if I put 3K in a CD and let it sit for 3, 4, 5 years Id have just about enough to cover a powerhead. And if I didnt need it, then I would have a nice chunk towards my new BC! You do the math.

Bama96, from what I understand you can buy coverage after a year but it costs more — how much more, Im afraid to ask.

I think it is a 100 bucks for every year gone by after registration.
