I have an 06 Mercury 225PROXS on my 06 Puma and have water get into my lower unit 4 times in the first 3 years i had the boat!!!! Finally after the 4th set of seals mercury replaced the lower unit in May of 2008. This past week end I changed the oil ( I change it every year and use high performance oil)) and it had water in it again. I do not abuse my boat or motor and dont run in shallow water. I had a 99 Jag with a 225 optimax and ran it for 5 years and never had a problem!!! Has anyone had a problem like this before and is there a way for water to get into the lower unit from above the gear case??? Since I have a new lower unit perhaps the problem is coming from the upper part of the motor. The first time time it was taken apart the carrier for the water pump and seal assembly was loose. The water pump has been changed twice and Im a little lost and frustrated about what to do!!! Please help guys!
There are lots of places for water intrusion. The shift-shaft has a seal on top that can leak. But this is a rare point of failure. Ive had a few but I run with no exhaust liner which lets that seal encounter a lot of hot exhaust gasses. I replace it yearly as a result as it will get hard pretty quick. In a stock motor, this isnt an issue. There is a seal on the drive shaft below the water pump. That can fail, although again that is unusual. The two most common points of water intrusion are either around the propshaft, where you get it gritty or else suck in fishing line which will work under the seal and break the water-tightness, or around the big o-ring where the bearing carrier seals against the lower unit housing. If the cover nut (that 4″+ inside gadget that holds the bearing carrier in) cracks, or if the threads wear out, then the cover nut will back/pop out a bit, and that breaks the compression seal the o-ring requires to keep grease in and water out. Since they replaced the lower unit completely, this is an interesting problem. You now know that it is unlikely to be a hardware-induced failure having gone through two completely different lower units (they did replace the complete unit I assume, not transferring the propshaft or driveshaft from the old to the new?) this leaves an environmental issue as the only real possibility. That is, how/where you are operating the thing has to be the issue at hand. Whether it be fishing line, sand/grit, a badly out-of-balance prop is unknown, but any of those can lead to this kind of failure.2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
Here comes a wild guess. Take a look around where the lower unit mates up with the engine and see if there might be a hair line crack on the upper part that might allow water to seep into the lower unit. I think that might be an area of interest for you to investigate. It might not be the lower units fault, but its the lower units problem. Again just thinking…. georgeGeorge
Cant happen. The “crack” between the mid-section and lower unit is not waterproof to begin with. And the mid-section is full of water normally from the water coming from the powerhead and draining back out the exhaust. You can remove the lower unit completely, submerge it under water, and none will get inside if all the seals are intact and functional and there are no cracks in the gearcase itself. I assume no cracks since it was replaced completely already.2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
Guys thanks for the info!!! Im taking it to my mechanic next week so he can check it out.
