Water pressure?

Never seen this happen. Has it been two years or more since you replaced the water pump impeller?2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200

sounds like u need to change the impeller. when are was the last time u change it

Its been two years since I last changed it. Looks like it is time for a new impeller. Thanks for the replies. Brian

Brian, I have an 07 HPDI. Last time I was in the water I encountered the exact same thing, and I mean even the same numbers. The water temp was 93 during a blistering heat wave. Im going to replace my impeller also. I dont see how an impeller can just all of a sudden go bad though. Did you notice your water stream being noticeably weaker during idle also?

reeldeal, Yes the water stream at idle seemed weaker. I dont get to fash as much as I used to. Last year when this happened, it was after a period of time when I had not fished in a couple of months. I started going more and my pressure got back to normal. It may be that since I dont fish enough, the impeller gets stiff and wont pull enough water. Its time to replace it anyway to be on the safe side. I have never had any problems with overheating and I think 12 – 15 PSI is acceptable. This is just weird. Brian

We think Yamaha prefers more pounds of pressure.

My last motor was a Yamaha and mine did the same thing. I changed the impeller after two years…still did the same thing. Believe it or not, I hooked up to the water hose and removed the jackets on the lower unit and let it flush for 5 minutes………….problem solved. My warning horn would go off at idle as well. “Mushroom” shaped pressure relief valve will stick if it has one grain of sand on it. My water pressure had dropped to about 12 psi WOT….same as yours. I removed the valve and cleaned it. Try this before changing the impeller.

ClintB, where exactly is the mushroom shaped pressure relief valve located that you are talking about cleaning?

I have an 05 Yamaha HPDI 200 HP. The water pressure the last time I was out was 12 – 15 PSI @ WOT. The time before it was @ 25 PSI but the water temp was 20 degrees cooler. I noticed this last year also. Does water temp affect water pressure that much? I dont get to fish as much as I used to so I am curious if this normal or if it is time for a new impeller. Brian

You should never have problems with water pressure on a cat unless youve got the engine super high on the jack plate. I pay very little attention to water pressure and watch engine temp a little closer.
