Water Pump

Thinking its time to replace the water pump. I fish a grass lake and was curious what guide everyone uses. I just noticed my water pressure seemed pretty low. At 5k RPMs I was only getting about 12lbs and usually I get about 20 if I remember correctly at that rpm level.

What motor ?? For a Merc those psi number are in the correct operating range. Assuming its a Merc flat rate to R&R water pump imp is 1.0 hr. If your interested in doin it yourself I have directions on BBC for water pump on the Mercs………Sherm

At least once every two years. The impeller on that Merc. is a small diemeter and has short arms. It is prone to not be as flexable as one with longer arms, it will take a “set” and not pump as well as it should. I change my own.

ZoomCat, the advice of at least once every two years is what I would have given as well. I usually change mine each year or maximum of every two years depending on how much I use the boat. If you are fairly mechanically inclined, it is fairly simple and very inexpensive, but if not, it isnt that expensive to have done. its on a 200HP Merc Optimax. 2000 model. Didnt Sherm have the directions posted on this site somewhere> Does anyone have the link.? thanks.

What engine model and year? And when was the water pump last replaced? Below are some links for removing and cleaning the internal strainer. On hint: Be sure you have an 8mm box end wrench to remove the lower cowling bolt in the front. Very easy task. Just takes time getting the lower cowling off. Mine was clogged pretty bad on my Optimax. I fish a lot grass and weeds and that can cause it to collect debris. Cheap insurance ! I replace the water pump and service the lower unit every year, sometimes twice a year if I get into heavy sand or vegetation and overheat !
