Can anyone explain how the water separator works in a 2 stroke Merc 150 EFI. My engine has been shutting down while under power. Once its off it wont fire unless I take off the water separator,empty it,put it back on,disconnect and reconnect power to the ECU and wait approx. 15 minutes for the ECU to reboot(reset). Once the engine shuts down the VST wont come on(pump) until the ECU is done resetting. The boat was stored over the winter with both gas tanks full with gas and gas treatment(marine) added.

I think they do not recommend full tanks for storage anymore. How old is the engine and are the fuel lines the newer EPA compliant?96 Eyra/12 Mercury 175 Pro XS with 2015 single axle trailer2017 Victory Gunner

The engine and boat are both 97 model year. Have always tried to run non-ethanol gas. Original gas lines,no outward sign of deterioration.

Those are almost 20 yr. old fuel lines. Mine were 3 years old with perfect outsides and the insides were coming apart in pieces. Even occasional use of ethanol can get pretty nasty to the fuel system if its not brought up to compliance. Is there residue showing up in bottom of the fuel filter canister? Have you ever rebuilt the low pressure pulse pump? Had the VST serviced? Sounds like youre due to have all three done. Might be time to replace the fuel system from the tank to the VST with a complete cleanup of the VST including the screen filter.
