My guess is your rig has more in it. I am sure PA will tell you it is the hammer on the back slowing you down. I would think that rig would do b/w mid and high 70s.
The hammer on the back but dont know for sure will still be there when the powerheads are being replaced on some of those other units. The 25P prop gets me the no seconds hole shot and really good response of throttle in rough water with maybe less speed. But havent caught many fish going 70 plus. Might be able to get a little more out of it but it is easy driving now, point and shoot, no steering torgue or very little, no chine walk. Tell me what you think so I can make changes if need be.
My o7 puma 3/4 tank gas under seat, two in boat ,i inch above flush on j. plate cool water cond. 76.1 gps. warm water cond. 74.6 gps
Youre way Sloooooow, even for a Hammer. Sounds like you may be happy the way it is. If so, then dont change a thing. We”re not all speed freaks. What RPM? You can get a little more by raising the motor but you really need a 27 pitch. You have to decide, “Turtle or Hare”? albassman, What pitch prop and RPM? Glynn
Still need to learn how to drive it but dont actually think i want a 27P might go 26P or blueprint this 25. Thought 2″ below pad was about right. Most posts say 3 to 3.5″ below pad on the o8 Puma. Like I said I am a novice to this kind of boat and the experience on this site is really unbelievable.
Ill tell you what I think- great hole shot, no torque, no chine walk. I also think you will get more speed as you become more familar with the boat. For now it seems to me you have a pretty good set-up
You are slow….if at WOT and 5800 rpms that is, and under calmer conditions. I had this motor on my last boat with the 27 T1 (not a Bass Cat)…and the 27T1 did not carry a load well at WOT with 2 people and livewells full…it is a huge prop. I think you are good with the 25 T1…should carry the heavy load better at top end. I think 2 inches below pad is too high…shoot for 3 to 3 3/4 inches below pad (I measure from the ground to the pad, then the ground to the prop shaft at level trim…and subtract the difference to avoid “eye ballin”). Make sure the trim is calibrated correctly…Ive got the 225 Pro xs on my 09 Puma with a 26 Fury and I can get youre numbers (almost exactly) in light chop with comparable weight at 3 1/2 inches below pad. That Yamaha should run at least 3 mph hour faster than my 225 Merc…..I loved that motor…would have gotten another one if the warranty was 5 years instead of 3 years. My guess would be 74 to 76 mph with your setup at the right engine height with light chop to calm conditions. I have two tourney buddies that run “S” I-class and ZX250 with the same motor and prop that you have and they run 74 and 76mph respectively under similar conditions with tournament loads…I have ridden shotgun, so I am not just taking their word for it. Your Puma is at least as fast a hull as the Skeeter…Ill swear by it…and as for the Craftsmanship of your rig…well, thats the reason I own a Basscat now!!!
Not sure about the Yammie, though sounds a little slow to me. You were carrying quite a bit of petro but, no water in the wells, I would think mid 70s. I can tell you what a Cougar FTD and a Puma FTD will run. Both equipped with 250 Merc Pro XS motors, medium fuel, light load, one person, cool water and air temps, low 80s. These rigs are both driven by anglers that have plenty of seat time. With me driving these same rigs, probably low 70s. But, with me drivin, the load would not be considered light If youre happy with your boat setup for now, wait till you get some seat time, then start tweaking.Last edited by bcjigginjoe on January 28th, 2009, 2:07 am, edited 1 time in total.
You probably could use a bigger wheel. Perhaps a 26 or 27. I know of at least one rice burner on a Puma that will run 80 and is spinning a 27T1. It too will run mid / upper 70s when loaded. Ive heard of another rice burner that will do in excess of 85. Though that one is one in a thousand. Learning how to drive and not being scared will probably get you at least 3-5 mph. Once you learn how to drive and get a comfortable feeling you can change props. Now is not the time to be spending money on different props if you dont have the feel as whether that is all she has.
