I am currently looking for my first Bass Cat and could use some help with deciding which model fish finder/sonar/gps units to put on the boat. Ive looked at the Humminbird and Lowrance websites and all the units can get confusing. I have been away from bass fishing for a few years so I could use some help/advice on what units to put on the new boat. Thanks for any help you can provide.
High Tide, #1: Put the best that you are willing to spend on the boat. As far as Humminbird vs. Lowrance goes, theyre both excellent and I would say that most folks are happy with whichever they own. Kind of like the old “Ford vs. Chevy” debates on this one, many have an opinion but theyre both really good. Humminbird has the side-imaging on some higher end units that some folks love. Lowrance is coming out (as we speak) with their new lineup of high definition units. All these choices make for tough decisions, since sonar technology changes almost with the frequency of computers. In other words, as soon as you purchase one somebody comes out with the latest and greatest idea ever. #2: To help with the above, I would say to decide on the size of screen that you wish to view next (and do you want GPS/mapping as well). Bigger is better especially if you will be viewing in “split-screen” mode much, and bigger increases cost. Both brands that youve mentioned have several higher end units with larger screens. I think Lowrance may have more “big screen” units with varying prices than Hbird, so you may find a Lowrance that fits into your budget easier there. Keep this in mind too, since Lowrance is coming out with their new lineup you should be able to find some real bargains right now if you shop around on their current models. Like the computer world, you can buy yesterdays technology at a drastic discount in many cases if you can settle for less than their “cutting edge” product. #3: Regardless of what you purchase, you will find that you have to spend a good deal of time learning how to get the most out of your sonar. All sonar units require some adjustments and tweaking from time to time to get the very best “picture”- much like a television in your home. None of the units are simply plug and play, as you may already be aware. Oh, theyll work okay if you just turn them on and go fully auto, but they wont likely give you their best possible picture. Heres a good website thats loaded with information that should help you both before and after your purchase: Sonar/Gps Installation & Operation I hope this helps some. I do think that the electronics are a major decision when youre preparing to buy a new boat. Everything can be rigged just as you wish at the BCB factory and you want to get this part right, because once its on there it can be really expensive to change later. Just take your time to nail this down and youll be glad that you did in the end. When you get your new Cat be sure to post some pictures for us John Helms Hot Springs, ARJohn Helms Hot Springs, AR
John: Thanks for taking the time to provide your thoughts. Good stuff. I will certainly post pics when I join the Bass Cat family!
If you want a fairly simply one the Lowrance 520c is really nice one and easy to operate. It has the fish finder as well as the gps and lake maps on it. Really nice buy too
Also, depends console size. If you are getting a P4, Puma, Cougar Elite, you can get more screen size. The most popular screen size is 5″. You cant go wrong with either company…. Good luck! What boat are you looking at? misr12
Looking to buy a Cougar or Puma FTD.
JMO console dont mean much with a Rams arm mount. I did not have to but with my 997 SI I still used a Rams mount. It allows me to turn it where ever I need, sun reflection lets my fishing partner use it while scaning. The best reason is the stearing wheel is not ever in the way. Rusty
